Non Muslim Backlash?

Thu Sep 23, 2004 1:11 am

Given the recent beheadings, terrorist attacks, Darfur crisis, etc, what is the possibility that there may be a growing backlash against Muslims?

Why? I don't think the Muslim in Dearborn, minding his own business and making an honest living should have to pay for some extremists in Baghdad.

Why would the thought even enter your mind, Maverick?

"Why would the thought even enter your mind, Maverick? "

Because that's exactly what happened after 9/11. There were attacks on Muslims and even Sihks who people thought were Muslim.

Why would there be ? Muslims living in Europe and elsewhere round the world have nothing whatsoever to do with what is going on in Iraq. While the behaviour of the kidnappers in Iraq is nothing short of barbaric, those unfortunate people that do get caught up in it are to a certain extent at least ill-advised for being there in the first place. If you don't want to get beheaded, don't go ! While normally I have no time for FCO warnings about safety, seeing on the news that someone got their head cut off would probably put me off from going, at least for a while. No doubt some of our more gung-ho adherents will consider this appeasement, and pandering to terrorism, but to me its like not wandering round South Central LA at night - it's just a stupid thing to do, and you're asking for trouble.

As for any backlash, this would surely only be down to the very ignorant and bigoted, for whom any excuse to lash out at those of different ethnicity or religion is a welcome break from watching WWF or NASCAR on TV.

Backlashes are never rational, nor do they have their genesis among educated people.

I would say that there has been very little anti-Muslim backlash in the United States for a couple of reasons: 1) Muslim countries have been helpful in the war on terror, most notably Pakistan and Indonesia, and even Saudi Arabia to some extent, and 2) many of the post-9/11 terrorist attacks have killed mostly other Muslims.

I agree. The Muslim backlash was short lived after 9/11, and even when taking place, attacks were done by mostly ignorant fools that identified anyone with brown skin as Muslims. Unfortunately, Sikhs were the ones who were pulled into that mess.

I wouldn't be surprised. People tend to act with stupidity when its out of anger. There are acts of violence to this day against Muslims and Jews around the world out of anger in response to Muslim terrorism and Israel, respectively.

JGPH1A,

Speaking of ignorant and bigoted, what do you think this comment you made shows about you?

"lash out at those of different ethnicity or religion is a welcome break from watching WWF or NASCAR on TV"

What a piece of crap!!!

I think the perpetrators will have to worry about the backlash at home and among muslims abroad in whose name they supposedly commit their crimes.

I´ve read that muslims are increasingly appalled and horrified by those cruelties (including the Beslan massacre) and increasingly recognize it as a problem they themselves need to address. Late enough, but maybe it helps constricting the logistics of the attackers.

Klaus in right on the money- the backlash needs to occur within Islam itself.

This "religion of peace" better straighten itself out.

Klaus- It has nothing to do with that. How do you even know I'm Christian? I might be any religion, or none whatsoever... Your point is totally inflammatory and does nothing to help the discussion, quite frankly. And if you're looking for bait, you won't get it. I won't defend any actions of the Christian church, nor will I defend Islam either.

My point stands and it valid. There is a massive rift within Islam that cannot be fixed except from within. Until then, and until the majority of this religion rises up and quells the radical Islamofascism within, nothing will change and it will only breed more resentment.

What's to compare?

Your pithy smarmy little wisecrack to what was a serious response?

You're smarter than that, Klaus.

A reminder that western christian-influenced societies have no reason to feel much superior considering our own less than impressive history. Compared to your aggressive and completely uncalled for attack.  Insane

A reminder that western christian-influenced societies have no reason to feel much superior considering our own less than impressive history. Compared to your aggressive and completely uncalled for attack.

Did I ever claim or even imply that western Christian-influenced societies were superior?

They are, but that's besides the point and it has nothing to do with religion, or the fact that any group of people possesses any inherent superiority. It lies in the fact that most Islamic nations are despotic dictator-led countries that exploit the citizenry, keep them ignorant, uneducated, etc. But that's only because there's a lack of CAPITALISM and PERSONAL LIBERTIES.

And for the record, my response wasn't an attack. You haven't seen an attack. I may disagree with some of your posts, but I have a great deal of respect for a lot of the things you say. Lest I remind you, you launched on me. If I read into that too much, then I would respectfully ask you to make the tone or context of your response clearer.  Wink/being sarcastic

I didn´t "launch on you". I made a slightly ironic remark not even aimed at you but at all of us instead.

I don´t know what you´ve got stuck in your throat right now, but it´s not me. (I checked.)  Wink/being sarcastic

Have a nice evening!  Big thumbs up

Oh, you took the shot at "all of us"...well, that makes it alright then.

You addressed it to me dude, not ALL of us....so maybe you have something stuck in your throat, but I'm not going there.

Make yourself clear from now on. Bygones.

Care to address the issue itself?

Wow, "massively stepped up the aggression"....sound like we escalated a war or something with thousands of troops. You won't have a part of an issue you started with a stupid little crack. Oh well...moving on.

Yawn.
