Hotels And Safety In Johannesburg And Cape Town

Fri Sep 24, 2004 9:55 am

For all the other South Africans in here-

1. Where are the best place to stay in Jo'burg and Cape Town, in terms of service and security?

2. How does one stay safe while visiting Johannesburg, and how safe are the Downtown and Linksfield areas?

Thanks-

Jonathan

I just visited both April 2003, so not sure how helpful I can be...

How does one stay safe in Jo'berg? Don't go downtown!  Big grin

Don't stay anywhere near downtown Jo'berg. The nicest areas I saw were right around the airport. There is a little farm that's a nice bed a breakfast right outside JNB, and for the life of me I cant think of the name of it, maybe the locals on here know. Very clean, friendly, safe, and affordable.

In Cape Town there are a lot of chains (Holiday Inn, Best Western), and all were very nice. There is also another that is right next to the airport, you can miss it as you exit. Plenty of nice and safe hotels right in downtown, and in the Table Mountain area.

It's a great country, and the citizens have a lot to be proud of!

Forget the hotels in Cape Town, they are mostly overpriced, guest houses are better value for money, better located and you get to meet some local people! However one really nice hotel there is the Blue Peter in Bloubergstrand, I stay there every time I go to Cape Town. Cheap too for the location, it's right on the beach! This is the view from a hotel room window

Cape Town is pretty safe if you stay out of areas like Khayelitsha and the Cape Flats.

Linksfield in Johannesburg is about 10 min from where I live and it's safe enough, stay out of downtown though, there's nothing to see there anyway!

It really depends what you are trying to get out of visiting Johannesburg as to where you should go.

Staying in JNB, the area round Rosebank and Sandton was always nice, out in the suburbs and well away from downtown.

Andz - wow, that guesthouse in Bloubergstrand is a real find - I LOVE that view.
Young and beautiful and thin and gorgeous AND BANNED ! Cya at airspaceonline.com, losers

Thanks to all-

Andz-

Wow, wow, that view is great- what is the guesthouse's price range?

We're trying to visit Linksfield especially- Mom grew up there until she was 8, and she's only been back twice.

Stay away from downtown Jo'Burg, as JGPH1A said, Rosebank & Sandton are very nice. This December when I go will be the first time in my memory of staying in a hotel in Jo'Burg, so I can't comment there, I always stayed at my Grandparents place.

Check out the Killarney mall, I liked it very much.

As for Cape Town, check out the Holiday Inn right by the V&A Waterfront, great place.
Proudly from the Home of the Red Tail.
