Those Sneaky Rangers

Sat Sep 25, 2004 2:12 am

The Texas Rangers are so nondescript that they rarely cause a ripple on the national sports scene. But what they are doing this year is nothing short of amazing. Picked to finish last in the AL West by a huge margin, they have defied the odds and are knocking on the first place door.

Yesterday, they rallied for 3 runs in their last at-bat to beat Oakland and finish a 3-game sweep. Now they are two back with 10 left to play.

Watch out for these guys.

Yep, the Rangers have been a surprise team. Some will disagree, but A-Rod leaving was a good thing.

I'll tell you the team who has impressed me: the St. Louis Cardinals. Having won their 100th game yesterday, and being 14 games ahead of the Cubs, and 16 1/2 ahead of the Astros, and with a pitching staff that wasn't expected to be anywhere near the level of the Cubs or the Astros, the Cards run is nothing short of amazing.

Nice to see that races other than Yanks/Sox are getting more attention these days. Both Western Division races are up in the air (my Dodgers aren't making things easy for me these days); the Sox have the AL wild card, so only the winner of Oakland/Anaheim/Texas will go to the post-season.

The last week of the season will be interesting out west.

I really have to give the fighting showalters credit. Like Tom said, everyone thought they would finish in last place as usual, but somehow they have gotten to this point with none other than Chan Ho Park! Now Texas just needs to beat up on the Mariners and not loose a series to them unlike the Angels. Also, Showalter is the definate pick for American League and Major League Manager of the Year.
