My Internet Connection

Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:00 am

Hey,

At the moment I have 512K ADSL with PIPEX http://www.pipex.net

Everything is fine with them and to be honest I have only ever had one slight problem, that being solved within one hour.

I've been with them for around a year now and I have decided to go for the 1024K (1MB) service...

What I want to know is...

Will I see any HUGE speed change with downloads?

BTW, can everyone who replies to this just post their Internet Service Provider, Speed of connection and a comment on their service!

Thanks!

Regards,

Christa

Eclipse 1Mbps, rock solid service, and I'm totally happy.

Go here to do a speed test http://www.dslzoneuk.net

Your maximum download speed should be just under 60KBps but remember it's not how fast your connection is, it's how fast the server at the other end can serve the data to you and how fast the connection between you and it is.

T-Online dsl, 768kbps, rock-solid service (by now) and almost seemless browsing

If you don't download large files on a regular basis, you won't notice much of a difference. And observe what Whitehatter said.

Ah ok..

Well I do download some large files..

Probably 5-7 times a week..

My Speed Test on 512K -

Download = 463 Kbps (57.9 KB/sec)

Upload = 250 Kbps (31.3 KB/sec)

BTW, My 1MB goes live on 29th of September, so Wednesday!

Pipex IMHO is one of the better UK providers. If I was one of their customers I wouldn't be too hot on moving as there are a lot worse than Pipex!

Sometimes you have to say "better the devil you know", and Pipex isn't too bad at all. For the US mob it is a former offshoot of UUNet.

Whitehatter - are you kidding? I used to have 512k and my maximum d/l speed was 65kb/s (lossless), now I have 768k and d/l speeds now get up to 95kb/s. So I'm imagining depending on server (and most decent websites will have excellent transfer speeds) you should get 120kb/s downloads.

I'm on PIPEX and so are a few of my friends..

All of them are on different packages..

Ranging from the 150K service up to the 1MB service..

All of them have excellent speeds for their service..

I have never had any major problems..only the odd outage here and there..

My download speed is around 60Kb/s..

Sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less...

I hope that my 1MB service gets above 100Kb/s download speed..

I could then do some online gaming, download multiple files (300mb files on average) and upload at the same time and still have plenty of bandwidth left..

I was talking about actual speeds after overheads which is a better measure of performance. Full-on measurements are great, it's the usable data figures which count to me when assessing performance.

On the full-on figures I get well in excess of 120

Currently with BT Openworld on their 576k connection, accessed through my Linksys 54g (802.11g) 54 mbps wireless network.

I don't pay for none of it, so I can't complain!  Big grin

So far my highest download speed has been ~710 KB/s.
I havent botherd to check my upload speed. All I know that it is good enough!

Micke,

I abolutely love it! Downloading stuff at that speed is awesome. Unfortunently you wont always get the best download rate.  Sad

The price seems resonable to me for 8mbit. My 0.6 mbit in vienna used to cost 72€ (I think it was) per month. I still remember the beginning of the internet when we used to get phone bills for 600€ (of which 300€ was for internet).

I dont know what the hell I am on when I plug in to the WLAN at my university, but I download at over 4MB/s over there. Now that is sweet  Big grin

At my home I access the internet through my private WLAN which is connected to a 2048 Mb line which allows me to download at 220-230 Kb/s.
My upstream is 36 Kb/s.

surely the whole point of a wireless lan is that u dont have to plug anything in to access it  Big grin
but i have similar speeds at uni aswell, they are running 10Gbit or something stupid.

at home, bt openworld 512kbps d/l 256kbps u/l, hopefully upgrading to 1mb soon.

How about having to plug in a wireless PCMCIA or PCI card into your PC?  Wink/being sarcastic
That makes wireless surfing a wee bit easier!
