San Francisco Earthquake A Few Min. Ago

Wed Sep 29, 2004 2:34 am

I felt nothing, but apparently we just has a sizable quake. Planes have been told they can land at there discretion. Airport crews are checking out the runways. I can see crew checking out the elevated roadways into the airport. Any locals here feel it? I just spoke with ramp tower and they said it was quite strong to them.

Well answering my own post. It was a 5.8 about 150 miles south of SFO. SJC I'm sure felt it.

http://www.cnn.com is showing it as "Breaking News" on their web-site. Details other than 5.8 in central California to come.

SJC closed for about 7 minutes (yes, 7 minutes) while they inspected the runways. No damage was found and they reopened...

>>>6.0, centered near Parkfield

Isn't that the town where they've been expecting one for years, and have the place wired out the wazoo with various sensors, or is that some other town?

Edit.. It's the one alright.. Maybe they'll get some good data such that we'll eventually be able to predict when these things will hit..

"Breaking News" as well in the Chicago Tribune. They say it's a 5.9 however.

5.9 Quake Shakes Central California

PARKFIELD -- A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 has struck Central California and it was felt from Santa Ana to Sacramento, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake, which struck at 10:15 a.m. PDT, was centered 9 miles south of Parkfield and 17 miles north east of Paso Robles, scene of an earthquake that killed two people in December 2003.

An aftershock of 5.0 magnitude struck four minutes later.

Paso Robles police said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Thousands of people from throughout the state reported feeling the quake.

"It rattled everything hanging on the walls and the chandelier was swinging. It didn't do any damage to our house. There were two shakers, one right after the other," said Ben Brown, who lives in Paso Robles.

Parkfield, located on the San Andreas fault, is known as the earthquake capital of California.

Far south of San Francisco. Called a colleague in Downtown SFO and gave him the news...he didn't even know it happened.
Guess it depends on where you are when it hits...but clearly not very devastating..which is great.

Maybe Superfly can comment....if not too busy picking out his new Mustang....

I'm here in West LA. Didn't feel a thing. Ohwell.

Note: It is pretty interesting how sensational the media becomes with this. A 6.0 is powerful but out in the Central Valley, damage isn't all too great.

This is ironic considering this happened the same day Candlestick Park has been renamed MONSTER STADIUM. > Acting devilish

Now that is BS right there. What kind of name is "MONSTER STADIUM" it sounds pretty generic.

Well, I have to say it's pretty unique and fits well with the name of their sponsor (monster cables). Almost a bit of genius too.
