Smoke Plume Seen From Mt. St. Helens

Sat Oct 02, 2004 4:13 am

On CNN they are showing live video of a big smoke plume coming from Mount St. Helens. It doesn't look like a huge eruption to me but it is pretty neat to watch.

I'm watching it on CNN as well.
It looks very nice. And it s a perfect weather condition for a nature phenomenon like this.

That's very, very cool. Of course, all the local TV stations have suspended their regular programming and gone to MOUNTAIN CAMS! I guess there were a whole bunch of people up at the Johnson Ridge Observatory and they got to see it go. Apparently they didn't hear anything. That would have been so cool to be there.
But that was when I ruled the world

The second I saw the volcano "erupt" I knew it wasnt a ash/lava eruption just from the colour of the "smoke" which was mostly steam, but also compressed ash was mixed in for good measure too.
It gave me a good 20 minutes of laugthing when CNN and Fox were reporting it as a "Major eruption", which it obviously wasnt, now im just listening to some American network with the usual people ringing up "asking the expert" stupid questions and so on.
I hope people who have seen this event maybe get a book from the library or a shop and read up some more about Volcanism and how it works and creates and destroys land.
anyway it looks like activity has died down significantly, not much in the way of magmatic quakes, its the usual "$64 million question" to see wether she'll do it again, or if that was just it.
