I just had to share this because it's so refeshing, at least to me...
So refreshing to not hear the word 'Iraq' every 5 minutes and the word 'terrorism' every 15 on the news; so refreshing to read the front cover of the papers and not read any reference to Iraq. SO REFRESHING!!
And the best part: my first weekend back in Argentina (last weekend), I went out to a pub with an old school friend and three of his friends, a guy and two ladies. After a few drinks which included the strongest Fernet I'd ever had, they started asking me what's going on in the United States, to which of course I replied grudgingly that the two biggies where the election and Iraq. Then one of the girls, her name was Julieta, uttered a phrase I'll never forget:
' What is Iraq?'
I literally got up and gave this chick a kiss, while knocking a couple of people in the next crowded high-round table. Everyone else laughed. They asked me why I'd done that and I said, 'Well, because I'm a little tipsy, but mostly because for a brief moment she made me feel like we were three years back'. Of course she then in her drunken state claimed to really know what Iraq was, but I don't discount the possibility she doesn't really know much of what's going on. This is not to judge what is going on internationally in a political context... But yeah, it felt unbelievably great to be able to forget about terrorism, or whether this time it was a bomb in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, or the Middle East, or about Iraq, and enjoy a care-free spring night.
It puts worrying about nasty pickpocketers, fiber optic cable thieves, crooked cops, and nasty drivers on a different level.
