Mirrodie, I keep getting a prompt to upgrade my computer with MS Servicepac 2. I just ignore it.....and hopefully it will go away.....I'm not sure what it is all about.

I have a new Pentium 4 HP computer and I am currently running XP. I also am using Norton AntiVirus.....

I would also like to know what it is all about???

If you mean Windows XP Service Pack 2....

it's got more bugs than a San Francisco hustler's crotch. I spent a whole day repairing a system or a friend who installed it and then found his system was screwed totally.

If you have a firewall installed and all the Micro$o£t updates then there isn't a lot of reason to install this monstrosity. There are too many issues cropping up with incompatabilities and the like.

More exactly, UNIX.

If you´re a savvy administrator with too much time on your hands: Linux.
If you need to get your work done: MacOS X.

It is just another jerk-off patch from Microsoft to fix the bugs the didn't fix when they initially released XP. It will take about an hour to download on cable, probably will take your entire natural life to get on dial-up.

What it does:
There are some more obnoxious bells and whistles that do shit nobody cares about. There is a more user friendly firewall control, but it still doesn't stop anything and a few other features that haven't annoyed me to the point of finding out what they are for yet.

If you run applications that require you to keep 100% up to date or if you just like knowing you are current get it, otherwise don't waste your download time.

If you still ran Windows Me, like I do, you wouldn't have any problems at all! No SP1, no SP2, no stupid security loophole requiring a patch or hotfix every 5 minutes... just a working, stable operating system (well, it's been nothing but that for me anyway) that does exactly what you want it to do without trying to be too clever all the time.

If you hadn't noticed, I hate Windows XP with a passion. Win Me rules!! Big grin

You are using Windows Mistake Edition! Everyone that I know that I know that had it preloaded on their PCs , I installed Win2K on it. I would take Windows Extra Problems, over Windows Mistake Edition. Again, Windows is an 16-bit port to an 8-bit operating system, from a 2-bit company that cant stand no-bit of competition.

FlytoEGCC sounds like our very own A.net luddite. Windows MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME did work ok on my computer for a while but It was buggy, at least as buggy as 98 was. I was initially afraid to drink the XP kool-aide but after having it a while I have to admit, it sets a new standard for reliability and speed (assuming you have enough computer to run it). Also, the great thing about XP, when a program freezes you don't have to restart the whole computer, you can just terminate the frozen program.

I hate Microsoft and I wish they would, just once, release a finished program, but I know people who live off Linnux and they spend most of their free time finding drivers for new hardware and finding software that will play well with MS products. I guess you can try something Unix based if you live at your computer.

Jesus has no one here tried to install it on a clean system. Have have put Windows XP SP 2 on about 200 systems, and have only ran into one issue (which simply needed newer drivers, and firmware).

You can order a CD of it for free from Microsoft free shipping even.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

The updates that come with Windows XP SP2 are mostly aimed at the not so savvy users, it turns on the new Security Center, which can help monitor your firewall, Automatic Updates, and Anti-Virus products. Better prompts for unusual executables, better control over the running, and installation of ActiveX controls, and a pop-up blockers in IE.

If you are an AMD 64 users, you will find speed increases since SP2 is compiled under the latest Visual Studio IDE, and Tablet PC users will find improvements since SP2 updates them to Tablet PC Edition 2005.

I have tried SP2 both in the lab, and on company computers and have found no issues. Note that I preform a through anti-Spywayre and virus scans, and run a CHKDSK before install. The system must be in tip top shape or you will have issues.

I have had no problems whatsoever with XP SP2 Home Edition. None. Rock-stable so far, including my 3-PC home network, 2 scanners, 3 printers, and various other junk all hooked together.

Apart from adding a few little tools and functions, the main change in SP2 is that Microsoft changed around some of the basic code of windows, with the intention of making many of the viruses designed to attack XP simply will no longer work. A bit of a chinese firedrill, where things are shuffled around, but to the user, 99% of the changes are invisible.

PPGMD, my fathers instructor installed SP2, on a clean machine, before lunch. When my dad got back, he was doing a complete reinstall of XP over the network. Its luck with this thing. When I beta tested it, legally I might add, that damn security center kept popping up because I turned off the firewalls and other BS. I went and disabled the service so it would leave me alone! And I have learned on the PC's that my dad and his friend rebuild and sell, the CD version is smoother.

Dan2002,

Not sure if it was in the Beta, but you can change the alerts the pop up from Security center.

Like I said never had any issues with SP2 on any of the many computers that I have installed it on. But if a client asks me not to install it on a new machine I don't, but it's pretty rare, and only people that are using ActiveX websites that don't match the new specs that SP2 brought along.

Thanks for the info.

So now, how do I get rid of that persistent icon and keeps telling me that an update is available?

Look for "customize toolbar" feature. Delete that icon.
