COX High Speed Internet; Like It Or Loathe It?

Tue Oct 12, 2004 9:30 am

Question's pretty self-explanatory.

They're offereing a pretty decent deal for off-campus LSU Students $19.95/mo + free modem; and sincerely thought I'd take advantage of it.

Have your experiences with this service been decent?

Fast enough? Decent customer service? Not always crashing?

...thanks

What speed? I have no experience with Cox, but generally cable internet is far superior to DSL offerings in my experience. That's an outstanding price for cable internet. Since I switched from DSL, which was nothing but trouble for the 6 months I had it, to Comcast highspeed internet, it's been a dream. My speed is 6M, which is plenty fast!!

In general, go for cable internet, NOT DSL.

(No, I don't work for the cable company!!)

Wow, that's a great deal! I have Cox Digital Cable and Cox Telephone Service. If I add their High Speed Internet to the package, it's another $40.00 a month - WITHOUT the modem.

I'm waiting until I buy a faster machine to get high-speed internet though. Right now I've got a PII 266mHz which is essentially a giant abacus.  Sad

EA CO AS,

Per their website (this applies to the metro Phoenix market, so your service may be different), they offer:

-Up to 4Mbps downstream

-Up to 512kbps upstream

That's for their basic package, at $39.95 a month for existing Cox customers. They also offer a "premier" package for $54.95 a month:

-Up to 5Mbps downstream

-Up to 768kbps upstream

$19.95 is a DAMN good deal... you would be paying that much for dial-up in most places these days.

I have Road Runner high speed through Time Warner cable... which is really the same as what Cox or Comcast or any other cable company offers. I have no idea how fast it is or is supposed to be. All I know is that it is $34.95 a month, and I haven't seen any additional charge for the modem. Haven't had any problems in the 6+ months that I have had it. Its always on, never seems to have any lag issues, its never been down. I'm pretty please so far.

I have Cox High Speed Internet at home and love it. We just moved last week and getting it set up at home went smoothly, other than one of their servers being down when I was trying to enter my account information. Then when their server was back up, I had to call their tech support again and have them resend the signal to my modem (or something like that). Only waited on hold for 2 minutes and the tech I spoke with was very friendly and helpful.

The service is great though. I've had it in the past and never had any problems with it, and its been great in the new house so far. $19.95 is an awesome deal, less than you'd pay for something like AOL's dialup. Unless you're downloading or uploading unusually large files you should have no issues. I wish we could get their telephone system too.

They don't offer Cox Digital Telephone in your part of the Valley?

Nope.... brand new subdivision in Laveen that has Cox Digital Cable, High Speed Internet but they didn't put in Telephone... have to stick with Qwest for now I guess. Qwest out here doesn't offer voicemail either!

Cox is weird about telephone I think. The last apartment I had was a brand new build at 52nd st and the 202... they put in digital cable and internet too, but no phone. Its weird as they push the telephone service pretty hard to TV....

That's odd. Give 'em time and Cox will eventually send Digital Telephone your way, though. They'll even port your number from Qwest for free.

I'm starting to wonder if I should just bite the bullet and go for high-speed NOW rather than waiting to buy a new machine. To the tech guys out there, would my lowly PII 266 be able to handle high-speed internet service?

So you're way out in Laveen? Isn't that quite the commute to the airport though?

I haven't driven to the airport yet from out here. I'd imagine it won't be too bad... just hop on I-10 at 51st Avenue... to the 202 and off at 44th street.

The drive to work though, that's getting old already. I work off the 101 and Shea... takes about an hour for now. I'm transferring to a different store in a couple weeks though, then it'll just be going straight east on Baseline.

I used to have BellSouth DSL. It was always having problems. It was regularly down for hours at a time. I switched to Cox highspeed about 8 months ago and have never had a problem.

THe service is excellent.

I use Cox High Speed Internet and have not had any major problems in the 4 and a half years I've had the service. I'll admit I was a bit nervous when Cox purchased @Home a few years ago, but so far that have not let me down.

I would also recommend you BUY a cable modem rather than rent one from your provider. Pick up a Linksys unit at Frys or Comp USA for about 80 bucks. It's much cheaper than renting.

Also, an added benefit is that the $19.95 is permanent, I thought it was only promotional. Also, I get to keep the free modem indefinitely by signing a contract 90 days longer than the original proposal!  Big thumbs up

$19.95 is permanent?? Damn, Man, you got one heck of a deal!

Glad you listened to everyone here and signed up for cable internet. You will never have the problems and issues that continually plague DSL service.

Concorde Boy,

How's it going? I have Cox HSI service, along with Digital & HDTV Service. If they offer $19.95/month service, sign-up now! I pay $39.95/month for 5mb download/256kb upload. I purchased a Best Data CMX300 external Cable Modem from Fry's Electronics about 4 years ago for $79. Cox HSI offers up to 7 e-mail accounts & 70mb of personal web-space with their monthly HSI service. I have never had any issues, great value! I wish I could score Cox HSI for $19.95/month. Make sure to read the fine print!
