The Good, Bad And Ugly Of Instant Messenger

Tue Oct 12, 2004 10:29 pm

I thought it would be fun to chat about Instant Messenging.I use AIM and Yahoo, and I have 10 of my college buddies on there, 5 workmates, and about 25 of my old High school friends. I'd like to split this post into 2 sections, one for pet peeves about Im and the other about ideas for "away" messages.

Pet Peeves
Here are mine
When a person Im's you and says Hi then doesn't respond back.
When someone goes offline in a middle of a conversation without saying "bye"
When you can't understand what someone says because they use so much slang.

Yours?

Also the second part of this post is being at college I have AIM and Messegner on almost 24/7. For AIM you can use away messages. Some people get really creative, I can't think of ideas. i usaully use boring messages like "I'm eating" "Gone to bed" "In the shower" etc. One I do use is "Avec mon Peeps" which means "with my friends" in frech, although "peeps" is english. I was wondering if anyone has any creative ideas for the following daily things:

"Sleeping"
"Gone to class"
"In the shower"
"Not at my computer"

Thanks
Andre

My normal away message just says "I'm not here"

I find that gets the point across.

But if I am at work, my computer goes onto standby and AIM closes. Which works just as well.

Some of my away messages...

Shower message:

I'm the man of the hour, a tower of power, too sweet to be sour...taking a shower.

or

Stop!...Shower time!

Inspired by a post in the trip report forum, with a slight enhancement:

On my last NW flight I got an awesome bagel w/ Cream cheese. Incredible smooth tecture and taste. Probably the best meal ever. It was only topped by refreshingly fresh cranberry juice cocktail. Fucking A that was an awesome bagel.

My personal favorite away message on AIM:

"I'm everywhere Focker"

(Meet the Parents if you haven't figured it out....)

Another one is an obscure quote from Chappelle's Show (the World Series of Dice skit):

"And when I leave, come together like butt cheeks."

And the most recent, submitted by a good female friend of mine who was having a rough time on the dating circuit:

"Pretty much I have learned to masturbate to fake porn on satellite."

My away message when I am sleeping -

Now I'm laying down to sleep,
Won't pray the Lord my sould to keep.
If I die before I wake,
Throw my corpse for dogs to take.

Shower - Rub-a-dub-dub, my ass is in the tub

Gone to class - I came up with a "Devil's Dictionary"-type definition of "Class." Alas when I rebuilt my system, I lost it.

1.I dont like it when people will IM me and then i'll respond and then they'll go away. What's the point of IM'ing me then if your gonna go away.

2. They constantly say BRB.

3. They say that they'll be back in a few minutes and they come back on a few hours later/never show up.

4. Ask me to play a game on AIM when i've already said no and that im already busy by multi-tasking and they still go on thinking that im gonna play a game.

My Away Messages are self explanatory:

If im going to the shroom i will put - I'm in the 'shroom i'll be back when I'm done.

or

School - I'm at school be back around 1.45 CST.

I've got many self-explanatory away messages.

It's good but if someone else is logged on, they can read what you are chatting about with your friend. Robert NWDC10

On my away messages I usually put "10-6 for a 10-40" which means "I am busy eating a meal" in police codes. Or when I just dont want to talk I just put "On the phone".
