How To Hook Digital Cable Box To Surround System

Fri Oct 15, 2004 3:51 am

OK. I'm baffled. I have a Digital Cable box, a Digital receiver, a DVD player and a VCR along with (an older) Proscan TV which has S Video inputs. I presently have the DVD and VCR hooked up to the receiver and do fiine with
the sound (5.1) there. BUT..I also have Digital cable and I want to get digital sound through the receiver when programs are broadcast in same.

How the heck do I do it? hmmm?

Thanks

First hook the box up to your receiver with digital coax (or an optic cable, depending on the output). Make sure your receiver is set-up to receive the digital audio. Turn to a cable-channel that you're certain is broadcasting digital audio like a movie channel. Watch your receive for an indication that its getting a digital feed. It should indicate Dolby Digital or DD.

If you're certain the receive is set up right but you're not getting d-audio, either you have a box that isn't digital audio capable (they do that sometimes) or your cable feed is really analog (they do that sometimes too). If that happens, I'd call the cable company and get an explanation. If your box isn't d-audio capable, bitch it them to get one that is.

When you say digital, do you mean Optical? or RCA (Yellow and White), or Coaxial, or......? Chances are in the case of Coaxial and Optical you will need a higher quality, new audio reciever to use those. In the case of RCA jacks, it shouldn't be a problem. The best quality will come from an optical cable. Simply stunning, I have a 5 channel stereo and an run it on an optical cable....it's amazing. Second best will be coaxial, which is more common than optical and should not be confused with "Coax" video cables. And just out of personal preference, I think you should go get a Satellite Dish, they are far better than digital cable, with better sound, and all the channels are digital picture & sound, compared to the 19 digital channels "Digital Cable" offers.  Insane In addition, the onscreen guide doesn't Lag.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

OK..I do have a digital coax cable from the cable box to the receiver (a 2-3 yr old Onkyo that does just fine with 5.1 movies) and believe it or not I had it working at one time a year or so ago before I had to take everything apart
when we were recarpeting the room and the diagram I carefully made while taking it apart didn't make a bit of sense to me when it came time to put it
back together.

So..the trick is in that cable from the cable box to the receiver? Maybe I have it in the wrong guzinta on the receiver. Everything else works just fine

Does your box also have the optical outjack? I'd try that just to eliminate the coax as the problem.

re f9widebody

I'm running a 2-3 yr old Onkyo receiver that does just fine with 5.1 digital movies..I run an optical cable from the DVD player to the receiver, and I have
a coax digital cable from the cable box to the receiver..and I had the cable box digital working a while back but as I explained to jetservice I screwed it up
when I hooked it all back up :-(

I'm not sure, but I believe the only way to get Pure Dolby D 5.1 without Emulation is with an optical cable. Can anyone correct me?

OK..I think I've got it. duh..seems as if the digital coax cable wasn't plugged
into the right spot. I plugged it in, set the receiver up correctly (video 2, and set for coax-2) and it seems to work. At least I'm getting digital signals. Haven't tried for something in surround sound yet (though I thought the cards-astros game would be)..will try a PPV movie later. But I think I've got it.

Do you own a camera (film or digital) or a camcorder? Take some pictures of or video of your home theatre wiring. I label each wire with tape. Try these links & check your local Cable TV or Digital Set-Top Box brand web-sites.
