DVD Regions, Why?

Sat Oct 16, 2004 9:58 am

Is it just me, or is the whole concept of DVD regions just idiotic? There are lots of foreign DVDs that I'd love to be able to play, but can't because they're for a different region. AFAIK, CDs don't have this problem, so why do DVDs?

Is there any logical reason, or is it just done to tick people off?

Yeah, because you people in the states get films on DVD when they are still in the cinema in other countries. So to stop people owning a film before cinema release in a specific country, they gave the regions...

Just get a multi-regional DVD player or see if your current one can be "hacked" to play all regions. Mine is supposed to be Region 2 only, but I cracked it and it plays all regions

Almost all DVD players can be cracked (except pioneers present more trouble ???) but there are risks.

DVD players are all the same originally with the region codes put on afterwards and these can just as easily be taken off.

The idea behind the regions is to control piracy and distribution rights by localising production somewhat. A great pain in the arse AND a failure !

Yep, it's really annoying cause if like me you live between two different countries and DVD regions, you have to unblock all your DVD players.

But I've found out that in France, it's very common to get your player unblocked at major places ( Fnac, big supermakets), but here in Canada, most DVD sellers never heard of DVD zones !

I ordered a DVD from amazon.com and it is Zone 0, in other words all zones. So what's the point?

You appear to be lucky, actually there is really few DVD's with such region code, and I can't think of any major Hollywood release.

BTW what's the region code for South-Africa ?

At the present time, I am pining for both the Asterix: Mission Cleopatra DVD (which was supposed to be released here a few years ago, but never came), and the Little Britain DVD. Neither are available in Zone 1, and I don't expect them to be anytime soon.  Pissed

It's just ridiculous

These are the codes:

0 No Region Coding

1 United States, Canada, and all territories/dependancies (except Puerto Rico)

2 Europe, Including Greenland, Turkey, Egypt, the Arabian peninsula, Iraq, Iran, Japan, and South Africa, but excluding Russia and the Former USSR nations.

3 South Korea, The Siam Peninsula, Borneo, Indonesia, Taiwan, The Phillipines, Hong Kong, Macau, and Hainan Island.

4 Australia and New Zealand, New Guinea, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, and Puerto Rico (Strange how they group OZ and NZ with South America).

5 India, Pakistan, Africa (unless noted elsewhere), Russia and the former USSR countries, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and North Korea.

6 The Peoples' Republic of China (Excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Hainan)

7 Unused

8 Airlines/Cruise Ships

NCEBoy the movie I ordered was the old motorcycle classic from the 70s, "On Any Sunday" so hardly mainstream hollywood stuff, which could explain the coding.

We are zone 2 here.

Why do they even bother? It'll just be a matter of time until somone cracks whatever DRM these morons put on it. How about making decent and reasonably priced DVD's that people will WANT to buy?

Does anyone know if Playstation 2, since it is also a DVD player, is coded for a certain region? And the actual games - do they use regions as well? Thanks for any info!

Playstation 2 is region coded for DVD playback, and also it will be either PAL or NTSC, so a US/Jap game won't work on a PAL PS2 and vice versa
