The Deep South Has Gone Too Far - Halloween Anger

Sat Oct 16, 2004 10:15 am

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/10/15/halloween.sabbath.ap/index.html

It appears that, since Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, some of the Bible-thumpers in the lower regions of our country have decided to go trick-or-treating on Saturday the 30th.

Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might get shooed away by the neighbors -- and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick-or-treating at all -- because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.

"It's a day for the good Lord, not for the devil," said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old granddaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead.

I don't know about you, but I never thought about worshipping the devil while going trick-or-treating. Ask most kids what the purpose of Halloween is and they'll say "to get lots of candy." Whatever demonic parts Halloween once had have certainly been commercialized out by now. This is just ridiculous.

Besides, if God really cared so much about not having Halloween on a Sunday, wouldn't he have rigged the calendar so that it didn't happen?  Insane

I'll 'celebrate' Halloween on whichever day I feel. I'm not going to let my city council dictate either date. If I want to do it Saturday night, I'll leave my lights off on Sunday night. Just for fun, I might just put out a candy dish on Saturday night and leave the front porch light on. Might be interesting to see how many takers I get.

And since when is Halloween a holiday? I know I never got the day off.

Oh it gets worse than that, Mir. Just wait until the Christian Exodus people have started re-settling in South Carolina in order to start their goal of creating a Christian theocracy (http://www.christianexodus.org)

Well I guess we know which day MD-90 and Sleekjet will go trick or treating!  Laugh out loud

This isn't the first time Halloween falls on a Sunday. This is an election year so those nuts down there make more noise than usual.

When I was a kid, our Church celebrated Halloween and had the Spooky Haunted House set up and we all had a great time. I never had any demonic thaughts.
Well I developed that much later in life.  Acting devilish

BN - this group of conservative Christians that want to entice other conservative Christians to move en masse to South Carolina, get involved with politics, gradually instituting an independent Christian theocracy.

Actually that doesn't sound like a bad idea as long as they are ALL CONFINED TO SOUTH CAROLINA!  Smile
Actually I'd rather they have Kansas.

Maybe civilized people can again have a say in politics again in Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee.

gp...I thought they were going to New Hampshire based on population and political makeup.

The rights of people to mark halloween on whatever day they wish would seem to be inherent in our society. Just like the Jehovahs Witnesses choose to celebrate no holidays. If people feel that a ceremony celebrating spirits and devils runs counter to their religion, who the hell are you to tell them they are wrong.

Live and let live here. If I was a kid I would ask if I could do it both nights.

God damn, I love religion! I worship the devil on Sundays because its my holy day..

Talk about paranoia.. fear of the devil. The devil is all around you, even on Sundays. Let the kids trick-or-treat on Halloween for christ's sake.

So explain to me when Halloween fell on Sundays in the past, I had to trick or treat on Sat. Night (I had my trick or treating days in a town outside MEM, Collierville to be exact)????

I love how the election "ruins" everything. Seriously though, as long as I got candy, I didn't care!

Having Halloween on a Sunday is handy because many people do their week's shopping on Saturday. They'll be able to stock up on apples and razor blades  Smokin cool

Err...isn't this a bit of a violation of the separation between church and state? People having religious beliefs gives no right for the government to change a holiday simply to please those.

Admit it, you like the candy  Smile

Dude, I don't want 'em here. I mean...being burned at the stake for being an "abomination in the eys of the Lord" (as one conservative Christian once called me) is hardly my idea of a good time. On second thought...North Carolina ain't looking so bad...

Maybe the Canadians could give them a stretch of land up north, or Alaska has some remote places, seeing that those people don´t like to mix with us satan influenced crowd. Or some uninhabited island in the Southern Atlantic or Pacific, somewhere in the roaring forties...
Nobody would disturb them there and their worship....

Ok, so maybe not South Carolina, but I think it would be good to give them a place to set up their own theocratic state and live their lives the way they'd like.

Hmm, since Christ was born in present-day Israel, maybe we should send them over there....well, actually, maybe not. Two religions is bad enough.

Makes me sick to be from Georgia. Sadly I dont think their is any intelligent life in the state of Georgia outside the Atlanta Metro Area with maybe the exception of other Metro Areas.

I dont have a problem with celebrating Halloween even on a Sunday.

It still astonishes me that in this enlightened age there are still people out there who are JUST THAT STUPID ! It's like they need a collective slap or something, to wake them out of their moronic stupor.

OK...so there are people who will blow themselves and others up over religion, and your'e giving some bible belters trouble over their concerns over offending their God? Give it a rest and find something worth complaining over. Freedom of religion means that people can worry about how they show respect for their religion and for God.

GP...I'm pretty sure it was a religious thing that was headed for NH. but I'll check. Where do these folks want to set up shop in SC...cause there is some nice property outside of Beaufort in the swamp they ought to be able to get. At least you don't have the racketeering, child abusing, polygamist, wanna-be Egyptian freaks like we did down near Reidsville.

I am sick and tired of all the narrow minded bible thumpers in this country. It is time for them to wake up to the 21st century. I say burn all the damn bibles, their thought process is way out of line.  Acting devilish

aa777flyer Thats pretty enlightened of you. Why don't we purge all the christians from our neighborhoods as well? Wait! I know...lets create some police force you can serve with to monitor the thoughts that are out of line for you...we will let you determine correct thinking, we'll even call it correct-thought...hey lets call the new government police force the "thought police" and give them absolute power to enforce the laws. And while we are at it lets make it a capital offence to be a christian...you know we could even make the executions a public spectacle....put them in the LA Coliseum and bring up some lions from the San Diego Zoo....

don't be an idiot.

I guess I won't get that South Carolina beach house after all.

Geez, they won't cancel Bike week at Myrtle Beach because of this will they?

Prosimtec - more likely than not I think this'll be a startling failure. The safety of Bike Week will probably be ensured  Wink/being sarcastic And hey, for the first time ever, those bikers will actually be able to legally get tattoos here.

DL - They aren't saying where they want to settle to minimize "anti-Christian sentiments." Suffice it to say that I think they'll choose either the upstate first as that tends to be the most politically conservative part of South Carolina, or go across the river to Lexington County, which would be the most politically conservative county in the state (one of the members of its delegation to the State House of Representatives routinely voted against a bill to legalize tattooing as he felt like the Bible was against the practice of tattooing)

According to its site, Christian Exodus has a goal of 12,000 members by the end of 2006. Nowhere does it say just how many members they have today. Something tells me it's probably a very small group indeed. Getting an IRS nonprofit tax exemption and building a web site does not require one to have the backing of a big organization.

I remember the last few times Halloween fell on a Sunday, we got kids on both nights, many of them just dressed in a different costume than the night before. If you don't want to celebrate it on Sunday, just don't turn on your front porch light. Once again, Georgians make Alabamans and Mississippians look smart by comparison.
