Ghost Cars.

Sun Oct 24, 2004 2:28 am

To those not familiar with this term, it refers to unmarked police cars. Last night I sat stuck in traffic and some $%#$ in a brand new Nissan Maxima, fancy wheels, tinted windows (very sharp car) went cruising past everyone on the shoulder. I muttered under my breath about how there is never a cop around when you want one, only to find out later, this was a ghost car! Usually I can spot a ghost car a mile away- big, American, black wheels, antennas, only a ghost car to the visually impaired. But to use an expensive import sedan is unusual here. Any other strange ghost cars you've seen?

Over here they tend to use Volvo T5's or a high performance BMW 3 series.

Quite popular cars here but still very hard to distinguish from a normal car.

"ghost car?"

Reminds me of how my hippie friends used to call narcs "yellow socks" and pilot friends refer to FAA employees as "leisure suits." Same issues with conspicuity.

A popular one here is the Chrysler minivan-countless thousands on the road, which one is the cops?

Where is this Avt007? I've heard of Caravans being used by cops, seen F-150s and Camaros, the latter seems particularly popular, when it was in production anyways.

Ly744-this is the Vancouver area. Camaros were used here, but they didn`t last long.

In Eastern Washington there are a couple of white Volvo station wagons that they use. Pretty tricky.

In a neighboring town they use all Volkswagen cars (VERY strange for the US). Its very hard to get accustomed to looking out for VWs and not the huge, obvious Fords etc... They also stopped using bright yellow Florida gov't license plates too to make it even harder to tell.
Now it should be "IFLYDCA"

I think they suck. If they have to announce that there will be a checkstop(which I think is stupid anyways) then why don't they have to announce they are cops?

Italy's highway patrol has a police car which would have trouble looking inconspicuous:

You'd be surprised at just what the police use in Britain.

Locally we have a Subaru Impreza which is usually driven by a raving lunatic, with blue strobes discreetly hidden until it sets off chasing someone.

In Essex, the coppers there has a McLaren F1 at some point for the M25!

Most other cars are Volvo or Vauxhall Omega types, with some odd Toyotas. Many of which have been snatched from drug dealers and modified for police service. The Ford Escort Cosworth used to be a particular favourite of mad traffic police.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

The NYPD has a couple of units disguised as taxis.

I was on the M6 today and a dick in a riced up Mondeo (of all things) decided to take a short cut via the hard shoulder during a queue. It made me so incredibly happy when blue lights appeared in the grill of the Vectra behind me, which promptly peeled off into the hard shoulder to follow him.
