Norton Antivirus-worth It?

Tue Nov 02, 2004 5:34 am

after a day of no being able to contact the outside world, im finally able to connect to the internet. anyway after a lengthy call to starpower (who i have to say are very helpful), they used a tracer on my comp, and basicly came to the conclusion norton anti-virus may be the problem. I thought so too, because after downloading an update for them my comp got freaky, and i could not connect......

but when i decided to un-install norton, all the sudden,my AIM buddy list popped up,and so did google, and A.net.....

and ive had problems with the complicated software before. SO,should i re-install it, or buy some other software? and if so, what do you recommend?

I have a friend who builds computers and knows a lot about virus programs and stuff like that told me Norton Antivirus is junk.

A few weeks ago my computer was not working right I did a virus scan that didn't find anything (I have Norton Antivirus for now). When I brought my computer to my friend he fixed it and did a virus scan with the program he uses and it found 2 viruses that Norton Antivirus didn't detect.

I THINK he used a anti virus program called Gostbusters.

I had a similar problem to Dragon-wings. My local IT geek found two viruses that Norton had missed, after many days of taking the thing to bits.

Also, I find that Norton buggers up incoming documents.

Never buy software... You can get it for free at emule and KaZaa.
Remember, downloading is legal, uploading is illegal.

Sorry KI911, While downloading may be legal (dubious) using the downloaded software without paying the licence fee is absolutely illegal. Get caught and you can lose your equipment.

Norton is not the best AV software around (that's why it is free on many machines). The best, i have found, is McAfee - based on good old Dr Solomons.

Back in the old days of Win 95 I used McAfee and an occasional free anti-virus program and found the headaches those programs caused were not worth any benefits. I got my first copy of Norton utilities and anti virus around that time because it seemed to play well with Windows, I have not had a problem since. No viruses, no more adware/spyware, and no software related computer problems to speak of.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

I loaded Norton on mine and had lock-ups and shut down problems and various other problems. I dumped everything, re-loaded windows and added McAfee and no problems at all.

I downloaded both Norton Anti virus, and AVG, but none of them wish to run on my computer...  Sad

I got not long ago the Norton Antivirus 2004 in downtown Caracas for 4000 Bolivares (about US$2) and works perfectly in my PC.
