Population Of London

Thu Nov 04, 2004 12:33 am

Was just wondering, if anyone knows offhand the actual population of London, England. By London, I only mean the actual place London, and not the area's which make up "London" if you know what I mean.
I think it's quite small, but wasnt sure

Strictly speaking, the only 'proper' London is the City of London i.e. the financial district. The area has a population of just over 7000 according to the year 2001 census. No surprise there because the area is mostly filled with financial institutions and no proper designated residential zone.

I'm surprised its even that much, 'London' consists mainly of offices and banks.

The population of the London metropolitan area (32 boroughs) is around 8 million as Thomas said, the population of greater London, i.e. the areas of which include bit's of Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey etc is about 12 million.

If you defined London as including the commuter zone, in other words areas from which significant numbers of people commute to jobs in the metropolitan area, the total population no doubt would be a lot higher.

This is arguable. Look at this way, at least they have the intelligence not to live in Scotland.

Well Banco, I have heard it said that Scotland may have 5 million people but London has the densest population in the UK.

btw whats your favourite tube station? Mine's Earls Court because I always seem to get asked for directions by crowds of Japanese tourists like they think I know the place - makes me feel like a local (which I was for a time)

Well, you're worse than me in that case Scotty. I've never lived in London, and never intend to. Nice place to visit, but living in a city? Ugh. Horrible.

Does something qualify as a nickname when it's only used by those who are downwind?  Big grin

Being an ex-Londoner myself The City of London only has about 8000 residents, most of who live in the Barbican or surrounding area, I used to be one of the few. However about 250,000 people actually work in the City during the day!!.

You must have a small penthouse flat then? Or alternatively a very large bank balance, a villa in St. Tropez and a castle in Wales, having sold the small penthouse flat!

Scotty

Thats why I moved down here to Sussex, too small a bank balance, too small a flat, cost more per month in rent to live there, than my current mortgage for my 3 bedroom semi!!!. Must have been mad!!!
