Start Your New Party Here... And Other Thoughts

Thu Nov 04, 2004 9:47 am

My intent is for this to be a CLEAN and RESPECTFUL thread, so don't ruin it. If you do, *I* will suggest deletion!

As I've mentioned before, I have become increasily disconcerted with the current two parties in U.S. politics. Perhaps this election shows that we need some new, national parties, to start coordinating efforts among our fractured populace.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'd like to see a party that bridges the gap between moral conservativism and social welfare, along with a strong interest in preserving the natural environment.

Perhaps the Green Conservatives? I dunno.

Yesterdays GOP move is part of a larger agenda.

The GOP will remain fiscally conservative and rapidly become more socially liberal. Bank on it.

The GOP is now able to return to it's roots and it will do so with the next Presidential Election. The DNC is dead.

OK...lets reinvent the Bullmoose Party. We can be an environmentally aware fiscally conservative, socially moderate party that encourages self-responsibility and morally ethical behavior. We can respect religion, human life, and the rights of others.

A Progressive Party such as this would be the answer to the desires of the northern and western republicans who want everything but the religion and the southern and midwestern conservatives who desire a government that leaves them alone but requires certain standards of behavior.

Let me work on this a while and post more.

You would never be able to steal the term "Progressive" from the Liberals. Besides, you just defined what the GOP was 50 years ago.

Fiscally conservative which means
Balance budgets
smaller governments
end of corporate welfare
repeal of the 1862 mining law
end of farm welfare
Line-item veto

exceptions for the environment which I belief is a trust handed over by nature or God to the people so then
More national parks
Tough new fuel standards for cars, trucks, etc., etc.
Mass transit as part of the transportation package
Other green initiatives

Exceptions for health care which again we as a society have to ensure that everyone can get it. Tax breaks for health insurance, and a pool for the poorest.

Socially liberal which means
Allow states to legalize medical marijuana, and marijuana for that matter
Same sex marriages are fine by me, but I realize that this isn't going to play in middle America
End the war on drugs immediately and treat it as a social/medical program while realizing that the profit motive generates the drug gangs crimes (like Prohibition)
Get the FCC out of the censoring business, you don't like Howard Stern, turn off the friggin' radio.

Criminal Justice
Reform criminal justice system, keep three strikes your out,
but strengthen the accused rights to a lawyer, to see all the evidence against him and for DNA testing.
Make not handing over exculpatory evidence by a prosecutor a crime.
End the death penalty.
Increase opportunities for insanity plea - a schizophrenic person, even if he knows right from wrong, cannot control himself, society should be protected from him, but he cannot be held criminally responsible for his act.

Foreign Policy
Out of Iraq, even if they are not democratic, or even if they are autocratic Islamists as long as they do not threaten us, it is none of our business how they run their affairs. It is arrogant and wishful thinking to 'plant democracy' there.
Deny aid to both Israel and Palestine if they do not immediately sit down. To monitor terrorism, have one side Israel trusts, and one side Palestinians trust to monitor the borders. Deny aid to either or both if they refuse to negotiate in good faith.
Spend money to clean up the nuke and chemical waste sites in Russia before some desperate scientist sells plutonium to terrorists.

Repeal some of the restrictive post 9-11 laws that make it more difficult to enter the country. Could take it on a case-by case basis. A visa from a country with a high terror risk assessment may have to be obtained by a personal interview, one with a low assessment (like Chile or Poland) wouldn't.
Stop the fingerprinting at the airports.
I may be ugly. I may be an American. But don't call me an ugly American.

Csavel --

I agree with most of what you've laid out, except that half of your category of "socially liberal" doesn't mesh with my idea of "social welfare." -- specifically because I *am* morally conservative.

Medical marijuana: perhaps. My opinion: prescription only. Just like any other drug out there, I am concerned about responsibility and addiction.

Same-sex marriages: No. I've heard lots of arguments about this and I don't want to get into it in this thread. I could start another thread on it instead...

War on drugs as a medical issue: yes. It would be an uphill battle, but I actually agree with needle-exchange programs and other issues which help treat drug addicts as straying humans rather than dirty criminals.

FCC out of the censorship business: I dunno about this one. I liked the idea back when I was a kid (and we're talking the 1980s, here!) that there were "family hours" when you didn't discuss certain topics or use certain language. That's my opinion -- remember the children, and the parents' right to educate their children about more sensitive issues.

After some more thought, I'll post more of "my platform."

I'll just consider myself an Independent, although after my most recent taking of the World's Smallest Political Quiz, I can very much consider myself a Libertarian. This year, as in past years, I voted for Libertarian candidates in several statewide races.
