Ashcroft Likely To Resign

Fri Nov 05, 2004 3:53 am

Although not a fanatical Bush-hater like certain "personalities" on these boards are, certain aspects of the Bush administration have tested my patience. Iraq war aside, the Attorney General's post filled in by John Ashcroft was thorn in my ass #2. However, while it's bad news that Colin Powell is leaving, it appears that John-John is exhausted from stepping on our civil liberties and may leave his post at the start of Bush's second term.

IMO, this only leaves Cheney left as the guy I wish would go away...haven't heard much from Rummy lately, maybe he finally figured it out that Bush hired him as Secretary of Defense, and not of State, and decided to button his hole and quit making comments on "Old and New Europe".

All this according to the AP:

Nice to see Goebbels -- I mean Ashcroft -- leaving.

Much of the press has Rumsfeld retiring (he isn't exactly young after all) and Dr Rice going back to her academic career. Aparently Condi yearns to get back into the university she came from (think it's Stanford or somewhere like that) and resume her work there.

Ashcroft is considering retirment due to medical problems. Bush probably will welcome it as he can put in someone less of a hard ass and is more acceptable to the Senate and Congress to push for Patriot Act II.
Rice could also be considered for Sec. of State. She was at Stanford University. Rummy should retire and put in someone who isn't such a 'yes man' to Bush.

Here's what I've heard as far as Cabinet changes.

Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Homeland Security, Attorney General, Secretary of State, National Security Advisor open up.

Powell may become Secretary of Defense, with his experience as Chief of Staff and a general.

Bernie Kerik may become Secretary of Homeland Security.

Attorney General is unclear, but I predict that it will not be Rudy Giuliani.

Secretary of State will likely be someone more moderate, perhaps Condi. Again unclear.

National Security Advisor is wide open.

Back to sanity...I recall reading somewhere he's got prostate trouble, possibly even cancer. If there's any truth in that I would wish him the best of luck.

Like I say it's something I recall reading and isn't confirmed

Now if only Rummy, Wolfy and Tom Ridge would do the same.

Somebody mentioned a "Patriot Act 2" - what's that about ? Will it make anti-Bush bumper stickers (even in foreign countries) grounds for an immediate "preventive" nuclear strike ?

What is the problem that people have with Ashcroft? Overall he has been a pretty good AG, sure he's religious, but that shouldn't interfere with his job, heck Nixon was a Quaker, and yet his administration was in charge during Nam.

Anyways I wonder who is staying, it's rare for a President to have the same cabinet through out an entire two term administration.

Last night, John McCain was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He was reviewing the whole election process and answering Leno's questions about "what will happen next".

I was very surprised when McCain said that we should expect Bush to appoint one or two Democrats to cabinet level positions.

He also said that Joe Lieberman would make a great Attorney General, replacing Ashcroft.

I have never cared for John Ashcroft and I will be glad if he steps down. His radical religious affiliation freaks me out. Isnt he Pentacostal? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Overall he has been a pretty good AG..

Sure, if you like the slow stripping of civil liberties; if you like a prude who can't stand the site of a nude statute, a work of art. If you like someone who has the power to decide which Americans taken and not allowed legal representation, whether they can be released or not.

The guy is a fascist. He lost an election to a dead man, and we end up with him as the freaking AG.

No kidding, what kind of AG tries to repeal a 200 year old civil rights law, and denies American citizens their 5th Amendment rights. By the way, speaking of his religion, well, I'll wait, I need to dig that book out and read up on that part before I post that.

Colin Powell was likely the most moderate voice in the National Security and Foreign Policy team. It's sad to see him go. As for Defense, I wouldn't rule Woolfowitz out...

Wolfwitz has stepped on too many toes-on both parties-to be more than an assistant. He's a crass, uncultured thug. He's not going anywhere.

I had to laugh at that. Lefties don't seem to mind the idea of strict gun controls, or even bans, which are also a 200 year old civil right. Talk about selective memories...  Laugh out loud

I'd very much hope so...
