El Niño's Back, What Do They Expect Where You Live

Sun Nov 07, 2004 4:04 am

I just love the news media!

One of their big stories right now is that the southern summer will be hotter and wetter this year because of El Niño. So, we should expect heat waves and lot's of escapades to the beach or the lake. Then it's on to the next big story: Argentina under a freezing grip!

LOL! Didn't they just say it was going to be hotter than normal?

Yet it's mid-November (like late May in the US and Europe), and it is warmer in Minnesota right now, literally. People were dressed with scarfs, coats, and mittens, as temperatures are near freezing and well below freezing out west where my home is. Tourists arriving by planes and cruises are in shock... The only good thing is that the sun angle is almost summer-like, so it will warm up in a hurry starting tomorrow.

What happens where you live during an El Niño?? Any disasters? Colder? Hotter? What do they expect in your area?

I am far from being a meteorologist but I believe these crazy temperatures are normal for the time of the year.

At least in Buenos Aires, during fall and spring you can have a 30ºC, sunny day followed by freezing temperatures and rain. This is why most people (myself included) get the flu in those months, as one's body isn't prepared for so radical changes.

Last Monday we had temps around 31ºC. During the night it rained as hell and on Thursday it was 10ºC. And today it's sunny again but it's 19ºC.

So basically I am not surprised by the crazy weather. I can only hope it won't last very long...Summer is comming, yay!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

We are experiencing its effects here with drought in inland Australia. It has been going on for a few years now.

Marambio,

Back east is milder than say Mendoza. There was warm weather for sure but the last week was cold and steady. In fact, in some areas crop losses thanks to this super late freeze approach 100%, according to recent reports.

From what I understand, Buenos Aires has been more 'normal', while it has been colder out west. The ski resorts were still sporadically operating!!

Here in Santiago things have been pretty normal...some warm days, some cold days...it's spring. I've woken up some days with 15ºc at 8am...then the next day woke up with 3º at 8 am.
Although, things are soon going to get hot and dry. And if El niño is back, then I should get prepared for a rainy as hell winter, as we always have problems becuase we're not very used to rain here.
