Mon Nov 08, 2004 1:30 pm

Right now, I am viewing the Northern Lights just outside of Chicago. I am still in the fringes of the city lights too. Go take a look outside to the sky. You may get a nice treat Laugh out loud

Why do they become visible this far south?

There must have been increased solar activity as of late. Usually, the solar particles get trapped where the earth's magnetic field is at is strongest--a band near the magnetic poles. When the particles from the sun increase, the aurora will likely expand. Wish we could see them here in Texas.

No crap! This was my first time ever seeing the northern lights, and it was awesome. My buddies and I drove east of East Grand Forks and watched the show. At one point, the lights were pulsating right above us. I got some awesome pictures. The only disappointing thing is that we only saw light green, I was hoping for some purple or red.

Ah man! Nothing but clouds up here in Anchorage. Oh well. Many more chances to come.

I saw the Northern Lights while flying BOS-AMS in September - it was spectacular. I also saw a reasonable show one night in Greenland - they are quite amazing, very ethereal.

Saw them last night here in Minnesota, they were very concentrated, the whole sky was green. A big, concentrated green band formed over my house, it was beautiful! I hope I can see them again tonight!

Will they be visible tonight in New York? (Long Island to be exact)

And if they will be visible tonight in my area what time will they appear?

Apparently they were also visible in SE Kansas last night, so my roomate said (who is from SE Kansas and his dad told us they were out) so they are reaching pretty far south.

Why do they become visible this far south?

Well, get ready when the magnetic poles are about to reverse... We'll be able to see the Northern lights as far south as the equator.
