The Official "The Rebel Billion" Thread

Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:11 pm

What did you think about Richard Branson's new show.

I personally liked it. It was a change from the Boring Reality shows. But I wonder if Branson himself was in the two challenges because the camera never showed his actual face. But the Official Aircraft is a A340-600 but with some glitches showing a 744 and a A343 taking off. Did anyone get a Registration

BTW the FAs that stand outside the door were HOT

Just caught the last hour or so of the show. I think I'll continue to watch it next week, that is if I don't get called on my reserve. To the typical viewer, one who is not so interested in aviation, I'm not sure how the show went through. I watched due to my interest in the aerial shots; the premise is OK. These shows usually get more interesting as the public gets to know the characters. A good concept and I hope it catches on.

Nice shots of the biplane wingwalking challenge but I was a little confused... how could one win and the other one lose at that? I guess if one climbed back down out of fear or dropped the pole. Nice to see the 346 as a Star. That plane is just plain HOT, as were the flight attendants! Hope to see more of 'em for sure (the F/A's of course...).

As for the plane type inconsistency: irrelevant and rightfully so as 99.99% of the viewers don't give a shit about this sort of thing.

Its as good as, but not better than, The Amazing Race.

Did anyone else catch the ending...?

VS A340 shown leaving without the final girl
AA 777 shown (supposedly as the same plane) rolling, and rotating down runway
VS B747 shown on the climbout... hmmmm

still a great show with lots of aviation

It was "The Apprentice" done in "Fear Factor" mode!
I also liked the way he was the cab driver...shocked the folks who didn't care about him...
And would YOU climb on top of a balloon? I wouldn't for ANY amount of money!

J --

I caught the tail end of the show and agree -- it's Apprentice meets Fear Factor with a little Amazing Race thrown in.

i thought it was pretty cool. branson comes off as a likeable if not shy guy!

as far as registrations go:

G-VZZZ "morning glory" is the 742 plane they used for the opening credits (currently parked), where they are all standing around/underneath the wing.

G-VEIL "queen of the skies" is the 346 they seem to be flying around on.

it annoyed me when the 346 is taxiing at the end, then they flash to what looked like an AA 763 taking off....uhhh, not the same? then when they pan to the sky, its the back-end shot of a 747.

The ratings weren't that great. Here's a piece from Reuters:

Branson has bumpy take-off in new Fox-TV series
Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:36 PM ET
LOS ANGELES, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Sir Richard Branson may be a world-famous businessman and adventurer, but adding "TV star" to his resume may be difficult after the premiere of his new reality series on Fox attracted low ratings.
"The Rebel Billionaire," was fifth among broadcast networks in total viewership and in the ratings for adults under 50 in its Tuesday night debut, according to preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research released on Wednesday.

Branson's show drew an average of 4.85 million viewers in the 8 p.m. hour, putting it fifth place behind the other major networks and "The Gilmore Girls" on WB.
