New Car Purchase.....

Sun Nov 14, 2004 12:55 pm

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to come on here and vent for a minute about the way people have been treating me since I purchased a new car about 2 weeks ago. I used to drive a 1986 Olds Cutlass Supreme, and I believe people took a certain satisfaction to that, because it was the oldest car around school. I always took great care of it, and it still looks great, but it was time for something new. So I went out and bought a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. When people saw me in my new car they were shocked as I never mentioned to anyway that I was even thinking about buying a new car. For some reason people have been dissing me and my car and I dont know why. Example of crap I hear is, "I dont trust the new Pontiacs, you should have bought a used one", "Foreign cars are much more reliable" or "It doesnt look sporty with four doors." These comments started after people asked me how I was able to buy the car. Well I am a senior in college and will be graduating in May, currently I have a pretty decent part time job as an inventory analyst, but will soon start looking for an accounting position after I gradute. Anyway I was able to get a super deal at the dealership, then my parents gave me their GM card earnings as a gift, and I am left with the rest. Assuming I stick with my current job and do not move, my plan is to have the car paid of by the end of 2005, and honestly I believe that annoys some people about how fast I am paying this off. Personally I believe that I am living the American dream as it is meant to live. I have always worked hard, lived within my means, had great money managment skills, and I have always been able to buy nice things. My new car is perfect, I went to the dealer and picked out exactly what I wanted, and it drives me crazy how people criticize me and try to put me down, when indeed I am very happy. Thanks for listening. I just wanted to ask you how you people feel about when your friends get new cars? Do you get excited for them? Personally I have always been excited, but a lot more so when my friends actually work hard and buy the car, instead of their parents giving them a new one, but thats just my opinion.

Jaws, it's really not important what other people think. I get people snickering at me all the time because of what I drive. I have other people who seem to have a lot of interest and respect for what I drive. Cars are very polarizing in many ways, and the Pontiac Grand Prix is just one of those polarizing cars.

Keep working hard, and you'll be able to buy many more new cars in your life time, but as you grow, and you hang around older and more mature people, you will likely find that you will get more respect in such cases. It's hard for many people to see a successful and mature young person these days, who has achieved a lot in a short period of time.

Jaws.. Congrats on the new car! You should've gotten the GTP though.  Innocent

I love the new style Grand Prix. It looks sporty, even in the 4 door model. Not to mention its been a Best Buy of Consumer Reports for some time now.

As far as people dissing you about the car, f*ck 'em. Jealousy maybe... I can't understand it. Usually when one of my friends buys a new car (no matter what it is), I wish them good luck with it and congratulations and it's usually the same way when I buy new ones too.

As long as you're happy, that's all that matters. You're the one driving and paying for the car, not them. You bought it for you, not them. It's YOURS, not theirs..

Interesting little slice o'life you got there Jaws707 and I'm glad you brought it up. It seems that when you buy a car, people view it as an embodiement of what you are. It's like putting yourself up on a display, with something radically different and new about yourself and saying "here I am, now what do you think", without wanting to. It can be a hard thing.

It's a real pissoff when you are happy about something while others are trying to convince you otherwise. Bear with it and worry not; the GP GT is a nice car, and fact is Pontiac is fessing up in terms of reliability is an argument to add. Since the appearance has changed quite a bit over last years model, you can take comfort in the fact that this model will probably not depreciate as much as its predecessors.

Screw what other people think, Jaws...the important thing is, are you happy with your car? If so, who the hell cares what other people think? Sadly, it seems cars are increasingly becoming status symbols, and that bothers the hell out of me, but oh well...

Shoulda gotten the GTP. Besides, as far as the current GP goes it's based on some fine, solid (by American standards anyways) time proven technology. The 3.8 traces its roots back to what, the 1960's?

Congrats on your purchase..and thanks for going with GMBig grin

When I was in highschool, all of my 'mates were getting the shit-hottiest cars out on the market....2000 was the timeframe, so it was GT Mustangs, Camaros, Trans Ams, Corvettes, etc etc...mommy and daddy spared no expense. And there I was, driving a 91 Dodge Caravan, then a 97 Chevy Suburban...it was rather humbling, but hey, I could haul everyone out to the beach and still have pleanty of room on top for our boards. I graduated driving that Suburban, whilst everyone else had a free car ride.

But, in my 2nd year of college, I picked up my 2000 SS Camaro....and I've been turning her into a shinin diamond ever since, so now when I see my old highschool buds, they're shocked to see me in a real man's car now, not the old beat up van...some of em moved up to newer cars, but alot of em had theirs taken away when they went to school/wrecked their rides/traded in for hondas or something more streetable.

The sweetest part about it though isn't so much about having a shit hot nice ride, but more the fact when my friends/a cop asks me if my mommy and daddy bought it for me....I can simply reply "nope...all me, and it's almost all payed off now too". That, sir, is the icing on the cake, and makes me smile every time I start her up  Big thumbs up

See ya on the road,

Thanks for the positive feedback, I have been on these boards for a long time, and even though I do not post as frequently now, I still read messages all the time, and I love the people on here.

On a side note, I did think about the GTP, and the extra horse power is nice, but I didnt think it was worth the extra $3,000 or so that it costs. Later this year Pontiac is coming out with a Grand Prix GXP I believe, that will have a V8 in it. The GXP isnt out yet, but limited info is available on the Pontiac website.

Thanks again, and you guys are definately right, as long as I am happy, which I am very happy, it doesnt really matter what others say.

Hi Jaws,
I wouldn't give a damn what other people think. They're probably mad they can't afford one on their own. I can't believe how petty people are these days..Cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed, not shown off as a trophy in a sad attempt to impress people. Don't let them spoil your enjoyment of the car. You live only once!

Btw the 3800 series V-6 is one of the best engines GM has ever made. My dad had two Buicks with that engine and they were practically bulletproof. I think GM is cleaning up its' act with regard to reliability. Most of their nameplates have done well in the JD Power surveys.

Enjoy your car!

Thanks for buying American!

I got rid of my Audi TT and Nissan Pathfinder and bought two Mercurys.

Quality is great, and the service I get from the dealer is outstanding.

I am so tired of hearing about cheap American cars, it just ain't true anymore!

Oh dear. You got rid of an Audi TT??? those are fantastic cars...oh well...to each his own

And Jaws, congrats on the new car--- people give each other crap when they are jealous. I.E., I bought an Audi, and all I heard was, why didnt you buy a BMW, Audi's are just expensive VW's etc. Dont listen to them. Enjoy your new ride.

I just wanted to say thanks for the responses I have gotten, and Vaporlock, I did not give up on my Cutty. I love that car very much and for now I am storing it at my parents, and I will take it back when I have a place of my own.

You know, the styling is a little wierd on these cars. Although Pontiac has gotten better under the direction of Bob Lutz, there's still way too much plastic moulding all over their cars, and the interiors are a curiosity with all the different plastic textures and shapes. The C6 seems to be a lot better looking.

Now the mechanical engineers were amazing. The 3800 is a fantastic engine with plenty of power and excellent gas mileage. I drove one earlier this year for a week all through the canadian rockies. We had tonz of car time, and the seats were comfy, the engine power excellent, and we averaged almost 30MPG with my heavy lead foot! Too bad those conservative Canadian speed limits kept us from really enjoying the drivetrain.

Pontiac interior designers should get in bed with Acura interior designers and try to learn some things about how an interior should look. They should also forbid them from any plastic moulding on the exterior. I love the interior and exterior of my Acura. It's sporty without being funny. I guess it just comes down to taste. Maybe there are Pontiac owners that think Acuras look crappy? Interesting....

I doubt that tristars. Have you seen the new Acura RL? What an improvment they made, and a good choice with going to an AWD setup.

Back posting here again I see, havent seen you around here for a while there.

Don't listen to what others say. If you're happy with your purchase and you like it... that's all that matters.

90% of the people that make negative comments on your new car are just jelous that you have a new car and they dont. They cant stand to see other people with nicer things than theirs. So dont worry about what others say. If your happy with it then thats all that matters.
