Bottom line is, most people are stupid and/or lazy. I'm not breaking it down by any demographic. Probably 90% of people on earth are completely incapable of taking the necessary steps to curtail these sorts of things, so the government has to do it for them. Now, I agree that a 3% increase in tax will not likely prevent anyone from buying a hamburger, but it will hopefully fill the coffers up a bit, and let's hope that the money is used to educate people, re-open playgrounds, etc. Just to bolster my opinion on human stupidity/laziness, let me ask you, why is there advertising? When was the last time you bought a car because you saw it on TV
? Don't you research cars, see them on the street, and ask friends who own one what it's like? Non-stupid/non-lazy people do. I don't need Coca-Cola to remind me that they are better than Pepsi. I know that because I've tasted it. Stupid/lazy people can't remember. Billions of dollars a year in advertising to remind stupid/lazy people what they want and need. That's why the government has to regulate.
