How Many Foreign Languages Do You Speak?

Wed Nov 17, 2004 5:41 pm

I speak English and French (almost) fluently , a bit of German, a tad of Japanese and some Elbonian. Also my work made me learn a lot of words and expressions in Spanish (although what I really need there are the swear words for those stupid Spanish phones we handle !)

Who else is at least bilingual ?

Cheers,

I consider English as my 2nd language rather than a foreign language. Most businesses are conducted in English despite Malay being the only official language.

I've been learning French for many years now so that's the only foreign language that I can speak at a good level of confidence. My lame and often shortlived attempts in Japanese, German and Mandarin don't really count...

Indonesian is very close linguistically to Malay, so I'm able to understand them quite easily.

I can read and write Arabic & Japanese but not necessarily understand them.

Unfortunately, I don't consider my proficiency in any language to be of sufficient standard to be considered fluent. I guess that is a side effect of growing up in different places around the world.

Hindi (almost-fluent)
English (almost-fluent)
Marathi (above-basic)
Gujarati (above-basic)
French (basic)
German (beginner)
Spanish (beginner)

Plus about a dozen others where I can communicate in specific situations but not enough to be considered even beginner proficiency.

I envy those folks who claim to speak a number of languages fluently.

Can speak 6 languages overall, of which only 1 is really foreign: French. Though I've surprised myself by the amount of coherent German that I manage when In a situation!

And I can say the following in a few others:

Please / thank you / sorry
Where's the toilets?
May I have a beer please?
I don't speak...

Next time you have a flat on your lorry while you're away from your flat, get your torch and tyre out of the boot. Some have the jack and spanner under the bonnet mate. Careful..don't bang the wing.

Or you can have someone else labour over your colourful auto while you enjoy some bangers and mash and maybe some spotted dick at the food stand. great flavour that!

Well...I'm off to the off-license then to the chemists to pick up a dummy and nappies for my son.

In no particular order

English (all versions)
Dutch (Dutch and Belgian versions)
French (all versions)
all enough to read, write, speak and shout back when required

By similarity with one of the formers, but at much lower levels
Afrikaans
Italian
Spanish
Letzeburg (Luxemburger)

Very rusty but where once fluently managed
Swahili
German (incl. Austrian and S w i s s when I had plenty of time)

With some doping
Greek without hands (extremely difficult to make oneself understood)
Greek with the hands (much easier)

I say enough is enough !

I speak English fluently (it's my native language and would be very difficult to do without in the US), and I'm fluent in Spanish from studying it in school - I'm in Honors 4 (I'm a junior in high school), and we only speak in Spanish in class. I am basically fluent in Spanish, but sometimes a word escapes me now and then. In class today, I couldn't remember for the life of me how to say "shower curtain" - la cortina, for any of you who care. So it's little things like that I have issues with.

English (native)
Spanish (2 years of it in HS, probably going to take another 2 here in college)
Hebrew (basic - except for some curses, which is sad, because I studied it for 6 years)

I know a couple words here and there in several other languages. Back in high school, I knew how to curse someone out in like 17 different languages (a benefit from going to a very international high school), but I really can't remember many of them.
