I see the thread title, and first person I thought of was Jim Nabors.  Big grin

Long live "Gomer Pyle, USMC"!

A good actor, giving (with the Drill sergeant) a stand out performance in an otherwise very average film.

Just a thought, I know it's very hypothetical and been discussed on here a lot already, but if the Draft did return to the US, given the levels of obesity in the West now, and generally 'softer' lifestyles, wouldn't the US forces be swamped with Private Pyles?

Where is Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, when we need him?!?!?

R. Lee is THE MAN!

And, about the draft? I think our military might be LESS like "Full Metal Jacket" and more like "Stripes".....

Maybe, but being a bit serious for a moment, how would they cope?
(Couldn't allow dodging by otherwise healthy people piling on the weight in the months before they'd be drafted).
I suppose they could have 'pre-induction' sessions, sorting out the fatties before formal induction.

As to the film, well the fact that Hue in Vietnam was actually the London Docklands just prior to extensive re-development and the Stateside camp (Pharris Island?) was RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, England (going to airshows there I recognized it immediately), as well as it being one of a glut of Vietnam films at the time, I've never been a fan.

But Kubrick was well into his decline by then, the last film of his I really liked was 'A Clockwork Orange'.
The old, more daring Kubrick, might have done a Vietnam film from the VC side.

When they are shaving his head he looks like Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins.
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself and all the while a great wind carries me across the sky.
