College Football Rivalries

Sun Nov 21, 2004 3:27 am

This weekend is Civil War in Oregon: The annual game between University of Oregon and Oregon State. There has been so much news about the suspention of 4 OSU players, there has not been talk of much else, but this also may be the weekend of Apple Cup: The game between University of Washington and Washington State.

My question is: What is the "big game" called between the rivals where you live?

I am not much into college football but I guess my heart is with U of O and WSU.

Our Big Game between UCLA and USC isn't until next week after USC finished playing Notre Dame. The rivalry game doesn't really have a special name unless you count that stupid "Lexus Ganutlet" which was a result of corporate whoring by both UCLA and USC.

In the Midwest, it is certainly OSU-Michigan. But the great thing about college sports, there's always "sub-rivalries", if you will, in a given region. Case in point, is this tuesday's Bowling Green-Toledo. (On ESPN Big grin ) School's are about 16 miles apart; players all know each other, and it's usually a bruising game.

And, this year, it could be for a bowl bid. Can't beat that.  Smile

SOme of the greatest rivalries are coming up soon. The Iron Bowl is this afternoon, with Auburn gearing up to finish the regular season undefeated if they can take care of business at Legion Field with Alabama. Next week UGA will meet Georgia Tech in a rivalry that this year will simply dictate whether there will be a News Years Day bowl or one sooner.

I think that there are some truy great ones coming up soon as well.

Army vs. Navy (Go Army, Beat Navy!!)

Notre Dame vs. Boston College (I think thats already done)

Texas vs. Texas A&M

THese are always some great games.

Purdue University Boilermakers vs. Indiana University Hoosier.

63 to 24...Boiler Up!

And once again, Purdue keeps the Old Oaken Bucket.

No, that's the name of the AAA baseball team in Toledo. The University of Toledo is the Rockets. And they have about the dorkiest mascot, Rocky the Rocket, that you can have.  Big grin

South Carolina's biggest rival is Clemson because they're the other Division I football program in South Carolina and the teams started at about the same time. To me, I see two problems with the rivalry:
1) It's a lopsided rivalry. Clemson leads the rivalry with a 62-36-4 record.
2) It's no longer an in-conference rivalry. At one time, USC and Clemson were both ACC schools. Then South Carolina became an independent. Then we joined the SEC. While other schools have out of conference rivalry games (UGA vs. Georgia Tech, for instance), I don't think it has as much meaning as when conference standings are on the line.
South Carolina - too small to be its own country, too big to be a mental asylum.

Here at CU we have two rivals...our in-state matchup with Colorado State. which is mainly for state pride since CSU is in the Mountain West and we are in the Big XII...our big rivalry is with Nebraska, game to be played next Friday, 12 pm Noon ET from Lincoln,Nebraska...this game actually has meaning, since the Big 12 North isn't wrapped up yet...improbably, its between us and Iowa State for the title (who saw that one coming)...we need to beat Nebraska, and Iowa State needs to lose to Missouri next Saturday for us to win the North...if we lose to Nebraska, Iowa State wins it no matter what...

I feel deeply in debt to the KU football team for beating Mizzou in Columbia and thus keeping CU's Big 12 North hopes alive since Iowa State had a miracle comeback against KSU...thanks KU!
