I Hate Radio Morning Talk Shows.

Mon Nov 22, 2004 5:36 am

I know hate is a strong word, but at least I am using it right by informin g myself of what I hate. I have listened to all morning shows on those local radio stations who's music I like for a number of years. They are the same and they suck after a while, a few laughs are cool but I want to hear music in the morning.

It sucks to hear 5 jackashes talk and goof off and play pranks and whatever in the morning. They almost don't play music anymore. What's worse is that everyone I spoke to at work scapegoats the radio station for this and claims the whole radio thing is stupid.

I'm fine with DJ's and the local traffic and weather reports, not with 4-6 hour chunks of talk.

Like my local hard rock station used to have Howard Stern on from 2am to 11am pacific standard and it drowe me mad. Stern's okay but not all the time, it is hard enough that my station is OBCESSED with beer and boobs that I can't turn the station on at work without sexually offending the ladies. (I grew up pop/hiphop, it's my style; I'm not about to get into the stereotype of tatoo's, pierces, beer, and titties 'n ass just because I like thrash metal...I'ma keep my combed mohawk b-otch)

About the only time I could hear any real music back-to-back was after 11pm, the last evening show called "The Mikey Show". When Stern was taken off, for 2 weeks it was cool, just music then Mikey move into the morning.

And not just the rock, if I go to the pop station (channel 933), if I go to the hiphop station (Z90), if I go to the country station (US 95.7), if I go to the alt rock station (91X)... I get the same thing. The music itself is dropping off the radar. It's more artist or even community member interviews and free giveaways, cruises and prizes not related to music, etc. Radio Stations won't even take requests unless there is money advertising it beforehand, i.e. popular songs get first shot.

I wish my pop station were like the rock station that they would play older pop songs; hell, to these folks old is 3 years and old school is 5+! So if I ask for Mariah Carey or Janet Jacson they be like, 'we don't play that stuff'.

Psh, I tell you what, there ain't no number o'songs that I'ma buy that'd make them play ma song.  Insane she-ot, I wish morning shows would go away... Sad

I can't afford satellite radio besides I like a DJ to be there and tell us the next song, I like the feeling that someone is behind the wheel.

See my reply in the "Who is your favourite DJ?" thread and you'll see I agree. Just shut up and play the music, folks........

Lephron you're 100% correct and I suggest you do what a lot of people have already done and will continue to do....switch to satellite radio. Start up costs are a little pricey (equipment and antenna) but for 10 bucks a month (13 for Sirius), you can listen to what YOU want to listen to....commercial free.

I, too, am tired of listening to "The (fill in the blank) Show" where we are "treated" to listening to what they did the night before or what their big weekend plans are or what their political views are. And Stern needs to take his condenscending remarks about women and his fart competitions elsewhere. It's because Sirius signed him that XM will be getting my membership. He says he'll take at least a million of his listeners to Sirius with him but I have a feeling that, given the high school aged following he has, the majority of his listeners won't be able to swindle the subscription money from their parents.

It's because Sirius signed Stern that they will get my subscription.

Seriously...like it was mentioned above...if you don't like them, don't listen to them. I know that would defeat the purpose of you having something to complain about, but it makes no sense to cry over something you can control. If you don't like morning radio shows, play a CD, find a station that plays just music, something. I know thats a tough concept, but damn.

I have never owned any CD's, it's not my thing to go out and pay extra for songs I don't want. So far it's come down to me going online, viewing the radio's playlist and downloading their song to see if I wanna keep it or not. It helps to hear them on the radio than loading them up 15 minutes at a time.

Besides, there is just something about radio. Radio will 'sell' a song to me more than anything else. There is a chance I will not be able to experience something without it -- like the memory capture ability when you hear them for the first time, what you are doing, etc. If I get a CD I won't hear them randomly, I will know they all will eventually play. I don't wanna know that ahead of time, radio used to be like that; I loved radio, but they ruined it. Heck I won't buy a mp3 player unless it has an FM-tuner-recording capability on it.

I've noticed that about morning radio too, all the games and nonsense and stuff, and not many songs.

Which is why my usual morning radio program is Morning Edition. If I can't hear music, I might as well find out what's going on in the world.

They are all the same after a while. No music but loads of Advertising and loads of talk and lame jokes.

We had a station which started up round here some years back with the slogan "less talk, more music". The DJs had strictly defined schedules and timings for when they could talk, and weren't allowed to say anything outside that! Advertising was sold on a basis of more exclusivity because there would be less of it and therefore the impact would not be as diluted as (for example) the brainless local station here who were running Jet2 and BMIBaby ads back to back....

It got so popular in the area it served that one of the local major radio stations bought it out and merged it into their own operation! Just goes to show that there is a market for less talk and more music.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Some talk is good, news and the traffic report but the rest is just bull, and the ads, Advertisements are important but I don't want to hear 10 ads in a row. Another thing that is popular is the traffic report have a tag line at the end, for home insurance, tyres, and anything else not related to cars.
A new radio station has just started in Brisbane and at the moment they are playing no ads still in the test phase and they were already rating a few points even without advertising.
