That poor poor baby. As I read the first part I thought she must have a mental problem. You just don't do something like that. I heard about this last night and it's just awful.

"When we investigated her case and opened the case up for intensive family based safety services, we referred Mom to services that she fully participated in," said Geoff Wool, Department of Family and Protective Services spokesman.
Wool said the state agency conducted extensive monitoring of the case and accompanied Schlosser and her family on some visits to mental health services.
Wool and Gonzales said they could not say whether Schlosser was on medication.
The case was closed in August.

I believe there will soon be a number of job openings in the Department of Family and Protective Services.

This almost seems to be a Texas phenomenon, I'm sad to say. First, there was the lady in Houston who drowned her kids in the bathtub. Then the lady near Tyler who stoned her sons, and now this.

No kidding... I live about a mile from this tragedy, one block north, and yeah its really really weird. What's worse is, a school teacher literally on the street next to me killed her daughter, husband, then herself in the middle of the night while they slept about a year ago. And another woman killed her infant on the east side this year. It's like every other day it seems like.

I don't know what's with Plano, but we've got some strange cookies  Crying

It sounds like an extreme case of a mental illness called Munchausens Syndrome By Proxy. That's where a mentally ill parent or guardian harms a child or other dependent to gain attention to themselves, as they become a central part of the action at the hospital following the incident.

That's just my thoughts on the why it happened issue, but like everyone here is saying it's a truly barbaric incident. May God receive and heal the soul of that poor child, and bless those who will have to live with the images of this in their mind for the rest of their lives.

Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

That was indeed a very disturbing incident. For what its worth, Texas leaves a lot to desire in its management of mental health issues. Even if the mother had been diagnosed with a serious mental disorder, its unlikely that the state would have done anything to intervene. I recall from my days as a criminal justice undergrad a story I heard during a conference on capital punishment. One of the speakers was a lady from Texas whose mentally ill son was on death row. They had known of his condition for years and repeatedly tried to get state assistance for him. They were repeatedly told by state mental health services that they could not do anything for him until he "acted out". When he did "act out", he killed five people in a most grisly manner. When they did provide mental health services following the killings, it was only so that this otherwise mentally incompetant person could be made mentally competant to stand trial for capital murder. He was tried, convicted and later executed in Huntsville, Texas.

Wrong. Munchausen's by Proxy is normally not this overt. Normally, it involves light doses of poisoning to make the child sick, but not so obvious as to be seen immediately as child abuse. The mother is then seen in the "poor mommy" light instead of what this woman is being viewed as - a sick, twisted individual who needs to be strapped to a gurney and sent to visit the child she just murdered!

I don't think she'd be going to the same place...

I was horrified when I heard this story. Oddly enough, I felt no anger towards the mother because no one in thier right mind would do something like this. She is obvously mentally ill.

Mentally ill or not , that is no excuse to do any harm to another human being or animal in my books, In some cases people go into an altered mental state after they have commited the act. In my eyes gas the bitch

Hey hey, come on, how can you guys say how horrible this is, then advocate the woman's death? Is killing bad, or is it good? No-one with a full deck does a thing like this, I pity the mother too, what must it be like trapped in that brain (shiver). I don't know what the answer is, but killing her (or the mentally ill guy mentioned by 57AZ) is as barbaric as chopping the limbs off a baby.

Yes this is disgusting , however if this woman is mentaly disturbed we may never know why she did this,as the brain is such a complex place,on the other hand if its proven she was sane when she did this then she should get what she deserves,if not then the help she needs,at the end of the day if she was not sane then with treatment she may remember what she did and that will be the worst sentence any mother could have realising she killed her child.
She would not be able to deal with it.

What she did just doesn't make any sense, I can't see anyway that she could reasonably gain from it, so it seems that she was just completely psychotic. It doesn't seem the same as that woman who drowned her kids so she could be with her boyfriend. If that's true then she couldn't make appropriate decisions or control her actions. It's horrible that this had to happen instead of her receiving treatment, the baby being removed from the house or both.
