IMO, the British social services are useless in my past experience.
Well I tend to agree. I mean it took us over 15 months to become foster carers. In that time we had numerous interviews and reviews, we all got CRB checked and then my parents had to attend a 2 month training course on how to care for children, yet they had already adopted my, erm, ex brother? Jamie, in 1994 so had been through all of the process once before. Obviously they had also been looking after me since 1986 and my mum had been a registered childminder since 1990.....Well what I’m trying to say is that frankly, I think Social Services are incompetent. They didn't take any of our past into consideration when we applied to foster so even at a time when foster parents were, and still are, in demand, they made us wait 15 months while they did their ridiculous checks.
It just doesn’t surprise me that they didn’t find out about those children in Sheffield. How could they when they are already stretched to the limits sorting out the Children currently in care and sorting out all that other bullsh*t I just mentioned.
Social Services, for the majority of time, work at making arrangements for the welfare of the children they already have, so they’ll arrange with the current foster carers the logistics of the matter I.E. clothes, money, beds etc be available for them but then on the other side of things they also have to sort out issues such as court hearings about custody and adoptions, then we have the medical care of the child to be dealt with which also includes caring for the emotional state of the child. In most cases were fostering is short term, a contact session will take place with the child and parent. And yea, this is the parent who had the child taken away from them, I mean ok, that’s fair enough if this parent wants to reform but in all honesty it just turns into another drawn out, pain in the ass process that I won’t bore you with. It’s not good though when the child doesn’t actually want to see their parent and comes back more traumatised than before, oh the lives we lead….
So really, thinking that Social Services are a god like entity that know about all the bad things that happen is just plain wrong. They now rely, too much, on other people who have concerns about a child’s safety to inform them so that appropriate action can be taken and that surely doesn’t work 100% of the time. The only reason this case was brought to light was because the dad had to phone for an ambulance for his ‘lifeless’ son. Christ!? It just makes you sick and I’m sincerely happy that they got 7 years. Obviously the system was failing these kids and it’s probably failing a whole lot more right now.
Thinking about it, this case is similar to one we had a few years ago. A 3 year old boy was spotted hanging out of a window on the 6th floor in a block of flats. This obviously got the police involved which then lead to transpire that this boy was actually home alone with just his dog, which he was told was babysitting him! Worst thing is the poor kid was surrounded by his parent’s surgical needles and other disgusting things. Just use your imagination. This world really can be sickening.
Ok, speech over.
