Windows 3.1

Wed Nov 24, 2004 11:13 am

I found an OLD laptop down in my basement (first the face on the wall, then an old Atari, now an old laptop!:D) and I'm trying to figure out how to use it. It's gonna be trash, but my dad wanted to see if I could try to operate it.

Anyway, when I turn it on, it goes straight to MS-DOS, when I KNOW that Windows 3.1 is installed on it, but I don't know how to get it there. Anyone able to help?

BTW, the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite T1910CS for all you computer geeks out there Big grin

I used to have the same laptop ha ha. I can't remember that far back, but if you ask someone who's super good with diagnostics...like your local computer repair store, they may be able to give you an answer over the phone.

Stick it on ebay. You never know what people will buy.

LOL. There was a joke around the net years ago(1995) about a kid who was mislead by the c:> prompt he came across when using an old computer and his grandpa got him out of trouble. I think the day has come... Don't take me wrong guys I just found this peculiar. Good night.

Type

c:>cd windows
c:>win

the autoexec.bat file may not have the right path command to let you type win anywhere

ahhh................ Real classics  Big thumbs up
I had Police Quest and LSL my self. Man a guy could spend hours with those games. But it irritates me pretty much that I wasn't able to get thru the damn game.

Hell, I still remember using Windows 2.11 when that was considered pretty advanced.

One thing I miss - even on those old clunky 8086 and 286 PCs, Windows would fully boot up in about 7 seconds. Not that you could use Windows for very much at the time...

Good luck getting me provoked with puny insults like that.  Wink/being sarcastic

But I guess it´s a side effect of you having to cope with Windows combined with that perpetual hangover of yours...  Nuts

Let's not forget the oh-so-wonderful printers that were common at the time. Who needs a laser printer to print a 50-page report, when you can have a printer that takes the same amount of time to produce around half a page  Big thumbs up

Can I have the laptop?!? I still support an old system written on Win 3.1 and VB 3, but had to leave my laptop behind when my prior company shut down. I am just hoping not to have to make any changes to the code since I do not have the O/S!

The best, or worst part, of Win 3.1 and DOS combo is the old memory management system. 640K base memory max, and whatever else was extended memory. Some programs, mostly games demanded a lot of that 640k base, and if you didn't have your system set up right games would not work. And it didn't matter if you had 16 mb of memory in your computer.

Wish I still had a Win 3.1 box...

Heaps of old games just can't run on a PC... even using DosBox, which needs a mega processor to run the old games properly.
