The Perks Of Your Job?

Wed Dec 01, 2004 7:58 am

Exactly what the topic says - i reckon every single job out there will have at least 1 perk - whos got the best perks?

I get free train travel, discounted food, discounted bowling / cinema, oh and lots of kisses off drunk women!

Ryan,

What about those drunken men too!?  Laugh out loud  Wink/being sarcastic

As for me, well there are not many perks.. But with our huge list of clientele, I'm sure there are some where I would get heavily discounted products from them!

Only thing I could think of..

Cheers,

In my next job (starting on 1/3/05), I will finally earn much money (well, at least more than before  Big grin). I even decided to pass on discounted air travel but I always hated to fly on these crappy stand-by tickets.

Another advantage beside more money: I will work directly at an airport.

I have you all beat! During lunch breaks/down-time, I can go walk the 737 final assembly. Walk right underneath the line and lovingly caress those beautiful wings as I walk by. Now that's what I call a perk! Free access to walk the line every few days and see what planes are going to who..

5 free magazines or paperback books a week.

Side perk is being right by ATL, so close that I can watch planes right from the parking lot.

I have a panoramic view of New York Harbor from my desk. I see helicopters buzzing around all day from the Wall St. heliport, planes flying overhead on their way to La Guardia, cruise ships and navy fleets sailing in and out, and on a clear day I can even see the action on the runways at Newark. Plus the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen, especially at this time of year when the sun is straight out my window.

Oh, and mediocre free coffee.  Smile

When i first read the Topic, my first reaction was of bitterness and was wondering where i could get a picture of a rodent with a pancake on its head to symbolize my "perks".

But i then put a little thought into it and realized i did have some very good ones.

The best being invited to several Pro sporting events at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto Canada. The teams are as follows:

Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Raptors
and the Toronto Rock.

All the above are in a private box with free food and drink and usually some goodies for my two kids and wife who are also allowed to come.

I also get invited to several functions throughout the year which involves, yet again, food and drink, and prizes. These prizes can be TV's, DVD players and the like.

So yes i do have a few perks  Smile

I work at Denver International Airport for United Airlines. My perks are - free flights anywhere United/United Express flies and having great photo opportunities.

Job security, however, is a whole other issue in this current environment.

I guess I am a "photojournalist" so I can work when and where I want. If I don't feel like taking an assignment, I don't have to.

It does not pay much at all (about 15 dollars a picture), but it's fun and always different.

Cool topic!

- From our board room, incredible view of Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains. From the southern-facing offices, we get an amazing view of Mt. Rainier when she's "out".

- Day after Thanksgiving off, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve off. (If we have to work, we can choose another day to have off)

- Vested in 401k savings plan immediately (extremely rare). Vested in pension plan after 5 years. Pension plans are becoming increasingly rare these days...

- Eligibility in the bonus program, based on company and individual performance.

- Being in the Corporate office, there's often free food after big meetings for everyone to enjoy.

- Bus passes for commuting...in the Seattle area, that's as good as gold!

- Specific to my job: I get to see virtually all the money come in and go out, and am responsible for knowing where it's going.

I get to wear shorts to work.

Tuition reimbursement.

I set my own hours (I'm the boss, I can do that).

Ability to transfer to over 5,000 locations in the US alone.

Job stability and plenty of room for advancement.

On the side after work, our bosses let us use the detail shop. Lets just say, at even 100 bucks a detail (which is normal price for my services), it's very well worth my extra time. And getting to drive a lot of new and used cars of all makes has its benefits too.
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.

Complete, utter, unquestioned flex-time;
Free travel/accomodations to relevant conferences/Government meetings;
Knowledge that I am protecting drinking water for millions of Americans, and even the Republicans have not cut our budget (oh sh*t...);
Getting paid to write major journal articles that will look great on my resume;
The ability to do whatever I want, stay up late, grind out a good wet one with my girlfriend at 3:00 in the morning, and stroll into the office with a sh*t-eaten grin at noon the next day, and work 'til midnight knowing that life is good.

Working at the airport
Occasional tickets to watch the Cubs, Sox and Bulls (the latter two might not be considered a perk to many....)
Tuition reimbursement
401k plan
A decent salary for my age and experience
Frequent flier miles, food and drinks on the company dime

Best perks of my job are:

1. Being able to wake up and walk down the hall to my office
2. No dress code
3. Setting my own hours--if I feel like doing trend analysis at 2am, that's my business
4. Having nobody around who complains about the music I listen to at my desk
5. The new computer I just built is tax-deductible
6. When I've had enough, I can web surf to my heart's content without anyone giving me crap about it.

Then there's the drawbacks:
1. My biggest client is also my ex-employer, and it's hard to completely divorce myself from the office politics that used to drive me nuts when I worked there
2. Erratic paychecks, or worse yet--clients who I have to beat payments out of
3. Having the dog stare at me all afternoon because I'm trying to meet a deadline and haven't taken him for his walk yet
4. Rushing to get something done just to have it sit on someone's desk for two weeks, waiting for approval

Ho-hum. Still the best job I've had yet.
