Taxi Drivers Wisdom

Fri Dec 03, 2004 6:46 pm

Hi
I was just wondering of any of your experiences with wise taxi drivers.
For me personally, taxi drivers seem to give the right advice to you at the right time. They seem to know what to say and at times their words can be motivating to an individual who may not be feeling so flash. I know that this has happened to me but has anyone else had similar experiences?

Have you had any wise and inspiring taxi drivers?

Many of them, you ask a few questions and they won't shut up. I probably would do the same after hearing people gripe and complain for hours on end.

Some are cool. You get a lot of drivers from PHX who are from different countries. It's often interesting for them to talk about where they are from.

Thats so true. I was in NYC in 2002 and I think we took a taxi at least 20 different times, and we ALWAYS got a cabbie who was from India or Pakistan..and they know the roads so well..its as if they were born there..LOL!

Springbok,
Yes, absolutely! I didn't mean my comment derrogatory in any sense or form! Of the many times I have taken a cab in NYC, I have always gotten to my destination safely, and as quickly as NYC traffic hell permitted! Big grin

LHSebi,

Yeah, its amazing how the cabbies in NYC drive so fast in that traffic!

I remember in 2002, we took a cab whose driver was Pakistani. He knew exactly where our hotel was and even gave an estimate of the fare based on the route we take and the traffic! LOL..now thats amazing..and in fact our fare came so close...it was over what he had thought of...by 60 cents!!
Amazing!

Sounds like the UK! (joking people).

Actually, I have had at least two American taxi drivers in Manhattan.

I don't speak Amharic, so the wisdom of my local taxi drivers is often lost on me.

Out here [Mumbai] they seem to know the Roads very well [Obviously].With the Traffic mess In the Evenings,Most just wait for you to ask them a question.Guess it boring with driving around the whole day without talking to people.

I'd say bar tenders give better advice. I have a good ear for English, but sometimes these cabbies in NYC really don't speak a shred of English. 'Where you go?' '71st and Columbus?' 'Ok'
