What's The Longest You've Gone Without Sleep?

Thu Dec 09, 2004 9:53 am

We've had the "what's the longest you have slept for thread", so pretty self explanatory, what the longest time that you have been awake for?

The longest I have ever gone is 53 hours a few months ago, woke up 7am Monday for school, did not get back to sleep again until 2pm on Wednesday. I was lucky enough to have an unexpected holiday, meaning I had to get a large piece of coursework in before I left Big thumbs up

Thanks,

One weekend down at the shore, I woke up at 8 a.m. on Friday morning. That night, we stayed out 'til about 7 a.m., then had a nap for about a half hour. Wasn't as much sleeping as much as laying down not doing anything. Same routine Saturday night, and I didn't get to bed until about 11 Sunday night. You can do the math, all I know is that I got a pretty good night sleep that night. Big grin

Probably about 30 hours. Rough. A few times I've gotten up, worked a whole day, cleaned and done laundry all night, then hopped on a plane and gone to vacation somewhere... At least twice I couldn't sleep on the plane so I didn't get to sleep until later in the day, after I'd arrived at my final destination.
Up, up and away!

Woke up Friday early for class, never went back to bed until early sunday morning.

Also when flying NUE-FRA-EWR. Woke up early monday, visited with friends all night, cuaght the flight Tuesday Morning, Arrived Tuesday afternoon, stayed up until early wednesday morning visiting more friends. something like 55-60 hours i think.

I normally only get 5 hours sleep a nite during the week, then almost none on the weekends. Never really bothers me.

I would say close to 48 hours. I flew from AKL-ZRH via Singapore with out sleep. We arrived in ZRH at dawn and I had to stay awake till about 9pm at night. After that, I slept like a baby.

I've had to pull several all-nighters at work. The worst one consisted of frantic programming the whole way. I went 31 hours that time.

While in England I'd say around 48 hrs. Planes, trains and automobiles.  Big grin

While I was working at a Grocery Store as a Cashier, they made me come in from 7am to 3:30pm on prom night, then 2-9pm the following day. I was awake from 6:30am to around 10pm the following day, catching light naps during breaks.

I have been working as a Legal Assistant for several law firms for over 25 years and have pulled a number of 'all nighters', that is to be awake for over 24 hours. The worst was getting up one day about 7 am and not getting to bed without any naps until about 1:00 pm the next day about 31 hours later. Another time was 'the lost weekend' where I woke up about 7 am on a Saturday, worked all day and into the night, with a 2 hour nap on couches in the reception area about 4-7 am on Sunday, and not getting home, by my own car, until 5 pm Sunday. Numerous times I have been up without naps for over 24 hours. One time I remember was getting up 7 am one day, and not getting to bed until 8:30 am the next day. I woke up shortly before 1:00 pm, turned on CNN and saw a building that had been blown up - the Oklahoma City Federal Building terror attack, which happend about 5 hours before. Talk about a wake up call! Of course, there has been numerous times where only got short naps during overnight/'red eye' flights across the USA, to Europe, to Australia and New Zealand.

The longest that I have been up was for 36 hours. That was pretty rough. After awhile I began to feel pretty wiped and I would think that I would see things out of the corner of my eye when I didn't. I'm glad that I don't have to stay up that long very often.

Hmmm...usually when I fly internationally to Europe.

I have a tough time sleeping the night before, as I'm so excited about my upcoming traveling experience, especially being at the airport and flying!  Laugh out loud

This year, on my birthday, actually...I woke up at 3am Seattle time on Saturday morning, went to the airport and spent all day in transit SEA-FRA on UA916. Once there, I took the train up to Cologne, then took another train down to Remagen on the Rhine. Stopped in Bonn on the way back up, spent more time in Cologne before finally going to bed around 11pm that Sunday night, after a few drinks at the Hard Rock Cafe.

All in all, 35 hours of non-stop fun! I was able to "rest" but not sleep on the 744 over to FRA.

When I saw the "what's the longest you've slept" thread, I was hoping to see this too. My longest is 41 hours, and my sleep immediately before that was only 4 hours.

I was going on a trip to Barrow, Alaska and was up late the night before flight printing seat maps, airport diagrams, etc., as I always do before trips. I woke up at 6:00 to get to the 8:00 flight. Enroute, we spent the night in Anchorage (arrived a few minutes before midnight and departed at 6:30 in the morning), but I couldn't force myself to sleep because all the freighters were arriving from Asia about that time, and there was still enough light to get decent pictures. I ended up not getting to sleep until 20:00 the day after leaving home. That was fun... oh yeah, lots of fun!

I suppose mine was about 2 days in total.

The night before we flew to Australia i could not sleep a wink, was so excited, looked at seat maps, and pics of planes all night (when ya cant sleep, why not visit a.net  Smile )
Got to the airport about 12 miday so i could have a good wonder past security, our plane left about 11pm that night, about a day of travel with a stop in singapore, Arrived in Brisbane early morning, and did not sleep till about 1am the next morning after meeting all the relitives.
Where does the time go???

(Sorry, I suppose it's time to let that go...)  Big grin

Anyway, my answer would have to be 27-28 hours.

I think my record is about 74 hours. A couple of years ago I was working overnights. I woke up about 9pm for work on a Wednesday. Worked through the night, then got home but couldn't sleep. Went to a company function Thursday afternoon, again couldn't sleep after that so went to work that night with no sleep.

Friday, was running around all day getting ready for a trip, starting to get tired. Went to work Friday night, fell asleep for about 5 minutes on my lunch. Got off work at 4am, drove straight to the airport. Checked in for my flight and was waiting at the gate. They announced a delay, I fell asleep for like a minute.

Got on my delayed flight to LAX. Fell asleep and probably would have slept soundly if it had not been for turbulence and my head hitting the wall (ouch). Got to LA, went to friends hotel and showered. Went to Disneyland for the whole day. Finally fell asleep about 11pm on Saturday night. 74 hours of being awake, probably 20 minutes of sleep during that whole time.

When I flew back from SEA to LHR and LYS.

Woke up around 8am in Seattle the sunday, flew red eye and could not get some sleep. Went to bed around 10pm the monday... That gives around 28 hours awake (accounting for the time lag)

Cheers,

Overnight flight to SIN, another overnight flight to AKL. ETA 1015 04/11/04. Didn't go to sleep until evening to avoid jetlag as much as possible. God Bless KrisWorld.

Done a few 24 hour shifts after we had planes going AOG, but we quit it because we were not up to the job any more, being too tired.
Back in college I once worked about 48-50 hours straight on a job, but I´ve got to say that for the last 8 hours we barely got any work done, because we were like zombies.

I need about 8-9 hours sleep every day to function properly.

About 40 hours a couple of weeks ago. Woke up at 7, had work all day (from 8 to about 4, then more from 7 pm to 3 am), then went to the airport for a 6 am flight, arrived in Boston a few before 11, worked from noon to 8 that day, relaxed until 11, and finally went to bed. It wasn't that bad until about hour number 38...when you're busy, you just don't think of sleep (and just keep drinking caffeine).

I some how manage to "stock pile" assignments for university and then land up having to hand in 3-5 of them 2-3 days, one after the other, happiness is having to hand in 2, 2000 word essays, 1 1500 word essay and learn for an economcis test, covering a 3 day span.

I woke at on Monday morning and worked non-stop untill wednesday when I fell asleep due to exhaustion, I was awake for about 55 hours or so, I nearly slept through my econ exam as it was wednesday afternoon/evening and I thought I could sleep for a bit in the afternoon, fell asleep and I woke myself up 20 mins before the exam was supposed to start, I had slept through my alarm clock and I flew to get to the test. I felt so sick that night and the next day, I slept for ages on wednesday night and up to lunch time on thursday. Will never ever do it again.

I however regulalry will work till 5am with an assignment and then sleep for 2 hours, hand it in and then go to lectures, so in a 36 hour period I will have 2-3 hours of sleep.

You feel weak and so run down, not advisable.

It's the life of a student who does no work and parties hard only to come home at midnight and then have to slog through all his work to get it done for the next day.
