Air Pollution And Engine Performance

Sun Dec 19, 2004 9:59 am

Having seen a similar thread in the tech forums, I would like to ask the following question.

Living in urban areas, there is as we all know, a lot of pollution. Since, I drive, I was wondering, does pollution affect engine performance or increase wear and tear? I was sitting behind a old pickup truck a few days ago and that thing was spewing blue flumes (oil burn). It got me wondering what that stuff is doing to my engine since it was being sucked into the air intake.

Any technique input would be appreciated.

Hi David-

I suppose that since the clean, cool air your engine is designed to inhale has been partially displaced by carbon from the pickup's exhaust, there would be a slight decrease in the amount of power your engine could make. But, seeing as you are stopped at a red light, I doubt you'd need all the power your car can produce. Laugh out loud
