and hopefully give some of you youngsters a piece of advice.
I hope that everybody here has been having a better last couple of weeks then I have had.
As some of you noticed, a while ago I almost hit a particular posting milestone and then stopped posting until now. Well let me explain what happened.
As some of you guessed in a different thread, I stopped intentionally at that point for dramaics and impact. I was intending at that time to come up in a couple of days with a great thesis to try and get some of you people to step back and consider the other persons point of view in some of the more politized subjects that were comming up, and look like they still are.
So after a week of non-starts on that great thread, I started to notice significat increases in my workload at school. Which wasn't unexpected since finals where comming up rather quickly. Ok, went ahead a decided to keep myself off the forums so I could concentrate on my studies. It might have actually worked since it appears that I have managed at least 1 A so far. Well finals ended this week. However it was not without some serious stress from outside issues, and that is where the piece of advice that I want to give comes from.
So fast forward to last Tuesday during the last week of regular instruction of school, I come home after class and there is a message on my machine asking me to call work. So I wasn't able to do much about it since it was nearly 11PM. The next day I get to talk to the station manager at work who asks me to come in. Well make a long story short, Apparently I was one of about 8 or 9 people who where let go, out of a company of about 30. So spent most of the rest of that morning running around and filing for unemployment.
Actually the end seemed pretty anti-climatic since the signs that the company has been in real trouble have been around for the better part of two years. I guess they are still trying to run it but truth is, unless owner decides that some of the mangement she has in place can't rub two sticks together, Let alone run an air charter company it isn't going to happen. I will have to admit that they have been pretty good about keeping my schedual constant while I was attending school. It is too bad that I will no longer be around when I finally get it. From what I have seen, the upper managment could use some of the education that this BAA Global Logistics Management major has gotten so far. Well the good news is that my Thursday night opened up so now a class that I need next semester isn't in conflict with work. This means that out of the 5 I have left for graduation, I will be able to get all but one of them done.
Well that is about where I am now, haven't really gotten hard core into the job search yet since I wanted to finish up those finals first. No point pissing away 12 credits I took this fall because instead of studying I was spending my time looking for work. The former seemed to take priority. Going to go spread my resume around next week before X-mas
Well at the start of this tortured tale I said I was going to the youngsters a piece of advice. The short version is that you want to do everything you can to leave below your means.
Now what do I mean about that, at this moment I am not in a financial crisis. Despite the fact that I got all more my Christmas shopping done before I got laid-off (Or sacked as the british would say) I am not going to have to worrying about paying for all of it in a month or so. The reason? I lived below my means and didn't max out the credit cards. In fact, I don't think I used them at all this year. Likewise I have been living below my means ever since the companies largest single client left last fall, which triggered last years mass lay-off at my company. This enabled me to put some cash away for an emergency, such as this. The only really big bill I have to worry about is my truck, food and utilities. Not a bad place to be when found in this situation. There is a guy on the radio, I won't plug his show or books, that gives finanical advice, and putting away that emergency fund is one of his big pushes.
So with any luck I should be ok, until I find new work and I hope that some of you kids realize that rather then buying the newest stereo, you might be well set a goal of getting either a fixed about of money in your bank account, a fixed amount that you never spend below, or having a fixed amount or percentage of money that you pull out of your check and then sit on it, and pretend it doesn't exist.
You never know when you might need it.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.
