Major Snow System In Midwest US

Thu Dec 23, 2004 1:35 am

Anyone else affected by this? Local news is saying we could get hammered. The snow they're calling for isn't enormous, but combined with the wind and sub-zero wind-chill, it could be an interesting night.

Right in the middle of it here, JetService. Right now, it's only light to moderate snow, but it's supposed to get real heavy this afternoon. We're expecting 10-16 inches of snow by noon Thursday, and also a chance of a "wintry mix", as they like to call it-some freezing rain or sleet thrown in, although that's expected to hit the far southeast side of Northeastern Ohio. Hopkins airport, and where I live west of CLE, is expected to get all snow ,and lots of it.

Kids get a White Christmas, and I may get an overnight stay at Hopkins.  Smile

IND has officially 10 inches (25cm) at the airport, but varies from 8-15 inches (20-38cm) depending upon where you are in the metro. Right now the howling wind and blowing snow are far more a problem. Some parts just south of us have up to 30 inches (76cm). Temperatures are forecast to be -10F to -15F (-23C to -26C) by Christmas morning. Midafternoon on Thursday it's 18F (-8C) and heading downward.

Jet Service, didn't FWA get hammered over the weekend or was that just SBN?

Here in Ft Worth, I just flipped the channel to the PlainsCapital Bowl, which is the local bowl game. This features Marshall vs Cincinnati. It looks like a high school football game with all of the seats available. It is a sad sight. Temps are dropping fast, so it will certainly not be a comfortable game to be at right now. I just wonder how many Cininnati fans were going to attend the game, but could not make it here because of the storm and the cancelled flights. Not that it would have filled the stadium, but it could have made somewhat of a difference for sure. Likely, the bowl sponsors are praying that TCU has a winning season next year.

StarCruiser, we lucked out in FWA. The first system passed just south of us. We only got round II which resulted in about 7" of snow. Nothing major. It wouldn't surprise me if SBN got hammered though. The first system missed them too, but they might have got a double-whammy from lake-effect off Lake Mich. I haven't heard.

Falcon84, I see you got what you were expecting. Our CLE office was closed down today. Sounds like you took a beating. Hope all is well.

Well, I finally made it home, after 37 hours away. Left for work at 1230pm on Wednesday, and just got home about 1:40am on Friday morning.

Left Hopkins at 1130pm Wednesday night, driving west toward Lorain County. I-480 was virtually impassable, and I was fighting whiteout conditions, so after less than 10 minutes, I exited the Interstate, and spent the night at the Airport Raddison. First time I can remember driving and being scared. It was just insane out there.

Went to work 3 hours early Thursday, at 10am, since driving west towards home was out of the question, due to almost blizzard-like conditions. Didn't clock out of work till 1230am, after a grueling day at the airport, with a lot of 5, 6 and even 7 hour delays on mainline.

But wait, it gets better! Got out to the parking lot, and my car wouldn't move-with the ice and deep snow, I couldn't go forward or backward!! I tried and tried and tried. A woman in our parking lot-I think she worked for AA, came out, and even tried to nudge me out with he 4-wheel drive truck, but no luck. I finally kicked some snow out from in front of the back tires, and FIANLLY, half hour after it started, got out of the parking lot. And the roads going west are still in shitty shape.

I get home.......and I've NEVER seen so much snow in my life! We got about 2 feet of the blasted stuff.

But I'm glad to be home. But my wife is at work, and the kids are at my folks' house spending the night, so I'm going to wrap some presents, unwind for a bit, and get a short respite.
