On December the 16, an infiltrator shot at an observation post in Gaza injuring 5 soldiers. 3 out of the 5 were soldiers from my unit. Even more so, they went through basic training with me. It was a real shock for my whole team to hear about it. Especially the first minutes when you don't really know any details yet. Thank god they came out of this incident only lightly wounded. The three were hospitalized for a few days and now are recovering at home.
My unit is based in the Golan Heights. We do observation work on the northern border using special equipment. During the operation in Gaza a few months ago my unit was asked to send a team down to Gaza as backup.
This is the first time that I ever knew a person that was injured under those circumstances. Only days before the incident I was told that I might have to replace one of the soldiers there. I don't want to imagine what I would have done I was there at the time.
I just hope the will recover as soon as possible.
Note: This is not an attempt to light up another unnecessary argument. I just want you to hear about some of my experiences as an Israeli soldier.
