€ Notes: Why 2002?

Sun Dec 26, 2004 1:46 am

The new Euronotes, with Trichet signature, still have 2002 printed close to BCE. Why? Shoudn't they have the year in which they were printed?

First of all, thanks for pointing out that there are new banknotes. I had already wondered whether there would be Trichet-signed notes or not. I personally haven´t seen one yet.

The 2002 is not the year of issue or printing. It´s part of the copyright notice. For example, I have a German banknote in front of me, the penultimate series which was in use from the sixties through the early nienties: besides the issue date on the front (Frankfurt am Main, 2. Januar 1980, accompanied by the signatures) there´s a small "(C) DEUTSCHE BUNDESBANK 1963" on the back. Same case as with the Euro notes.

There was actually a case in Berlin where some people thought that they had counterfeit euro notes and went to the police. They were real notes, they had compared a Trichet to a Duisenberg signature.

"Thank god for Pound Notes and coins"

What, you mean these moronically shaped coins that make you wonder "Why's this one the biggest and heaviest yet worth only half of that tiny one?" every time you look into your wallet?  Big grin Seriously, travelling to London, my wallet got painfully heavy from worthless coins pretty fast.
