Sri Lankan Cricket Tour Of NZ Forced To Go Ahead

Wed Dec 29, 2004 3:53 pm

The International Cricket Council (ICC), based in London, have ruled that the tour of New Zealand must go ahead despite what has happened to the touring cricket teams home country. 19,000 people have been killed so far in the touring cricket teams country. One players mother has been killed by the Tsunami. The New Zealand Cricket Board said the tour could be postponed till mid January so the Sri Lanka cricket team could go home. The ICCs reason for demanding that the tour go ahead was that....a tour can only be cancelled if there is a security threat to the players or the government of the nations involved call the teams back. The New Zealand Cricket Boards reaction to the ruling was "grow up"

The Sri Lanka Cricket board allowed it's players to go back but not more that 3 days before they have to return. Childish of the ICC in my opinion. Sri Lanka are in a loose loose situation, if they stay the players will miss out on their families etc... in their time of need, if they stay the countrys Cricket board will face a hefty fine of millions of dollars.

NZ Cricket said that they have no problems with postponing the tour after all and I quote "It (cricket) is just a game"

People, one needs to find out what has happened before passing judgement on the ICC. ICC rules state that any tour can only be cancelled with the agreement of both nations. Sri Lanka has said they want to cancel. New Zealand has also said they would support a postponement of the tour. However, neither the SLC or NZC have approached the ICC on this issue.

The Great Dalmiya was former head of the ICC, and now runs the Indian cricket board (BCCI). He's a man of great honesty, integrity and foresight, who made cricket the moneymaking commercialized enterprise it is today. The current ICC leadership hates his guts, as does a.net member Banco here (see the winter 2004-05 cricket thread). I'll wait for him to come and trash this post of mine and call me an idiot, or worse  Smile

Ummmm, that credit would actually go to Kerry Packer with his introduction of World Series Cricket in 1977.  Big grin

Muttiah Muralitharan had a miraculous escape from the tsunami too. He appatently left the Galle Stadium minutes before it hit. Television scenes showed the ground looking like a waterlogged swamp now.

I watched the Sri Lankan team board a bus for the airport on One News. They hope to do another tour within 2 years.
At least priorities prevailed.

As the head of the NZ cricket board said 'It is just a Game'. There are other more important things unrelated to cricket at this time.
