You Know You're From New Jersey When...

Mon Jan 03, 2005 6:37 am

With all these threads that read "you know you're in a certain state when..", I thought is was fitting when I went to Church this morning, and they had a New Jersey version of it in the bulletin. So, without further ado, You know You're from New Jersey when...

1)You don't think of citrus when people mention "The Oranges"
2)You remember that the "two guys" were from Harrison
3)You know what a "jug handle" is
4)You know there are no beaches in New Jersey - there's The Shore
5)You know how to negotiate a circle (doesn't really apply to Europe, they have lots of 'em)
6)You know the last statement had to do with driving
7)You know this is the only "New" state that doesn't require the "New" to identify it(try Mexico, York, Hampshire ... doesn't work)
8)You know that the real first "strip shopping center" in the country is Route 22
9)You live within 20 minutes of at least 3 malls
10)You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers
11)You've never pumped your own gas.

I actually went to EWR today not knowing PM was going to be there. As I was leaving, I saw it taxing to the gate. Must have landed as I was leaving the parking garage.  Sad

13. You know what a Wawa is. (or at least you can see Jersey from where you live.)
14. You can't drive to/from work without seeing fresh-killed deer on the road.
15. Everyone from out of state thinks you pronounce it Joisy.

You know you're an NJ CAP GSAR if you can name the location of at least five Wawas. Big grin

-You recognize where many scenes in 'The Sopranos' were done (90% of the outdoor shots are done in New Jersey, where the story set. A number of scenes have been done within a few miles from my house.
-If you live in some Northern NJ areas, you know what a 'Texas Weiner' is
(a deep fried or griddle done hot dog, with mustard, chopped onions and a chilli sauce...mmmm.)
-If you want to buy beer, with some exceptions, you have to go to a full service license store (you cannot buy beer in almost all grocery stores unlike most states)
-You live near a 'Quick Chek' convenience store (by the way, Wawa is a Pennsylvania convenience store and dairy with most NJ stores in western, central and southern NJ)
-You have a favorite shore town, and know which exit on the GSP to use
-You have been to Atlantic City to gamble
-You must have at least one or two neighbors or relatives whom are in whole or part Italian ancestrey
-When you travel, you realize that NJ has some of the lowest gasoline prices in the USA
-If you commute to NYC or Phildelphia, you use NJ Transit
-You aren't sure of the name of the current govenor (Codey)
-You insist that the NFL Giants, Jets, NBA Nets, be referred to the NJ not NY Giants/Jets/Nets
-You know what the 'Jersey Devil' or a 'Piney' is
-You have a favorite Diner, and is almost always operated by people of Greek decent
-You almost faint when you get your car insurance premium bill (we have the highest state-wide premiums in the USA)
-When you travel out of state, people ask you which exit you live near
-Your hometown has a Superfund toxic waste site or one that was cleaned up
-Your parents have to move and sell their home because they cannot affort their property taxes any more
-You know the state motto is "The Garden State", but the only gardens you know of are of your neighbors' tomato garden (actually the southern part of the state is still a significant source of great tomatos, and other food crops)
-The state bird seems to the one-fingered salute (actually, it's the Goldfinch)
-That your town is around 1 square mile in size or less.
-In a drive along any of the Interstate or divided highways, you likely to see at least one dead deer along the side of the road
-When your proud to say YOU COME FROM NEW JERSEY!

I'm from New Jersey, and I think the "What Exit?" comment is hysterical. Last summer, I went to a youth leadership convention for ten days in Washington DC with kids from all over the country. Whenever I met someone from NJ and I didn't recognize the town they were from, I'd say "What exit are you on the Parkway?" Kids from states like Wyoming and South Dakota thought I was nuts.

Separately, regarding the gas station thing, it is really funny when we go on vacation and have to get gas before returning the rental car. We went to Florida in November, and we pulled up to a gas station near PBI. The four of us sat in the car for a good five minutes, wondering where the attendant was, until I realized, "Wait a second, Dad. You've got to pump the gas." We had a good laugh about that one on the flight home.

--You know it's really not a joke to call it the "Garden State Parking Lot."
--You bear right to turn left (the aforementioned jug handles)
--You curse Philadelphia for sending all of its smog to Camden
--You can answer the question, "What is the Delaware Water Gap?"
--You have two NFL teams but you still have to root for "New York"
--Sometimes you long to pump your own gas
--You remember the "eggs well done" controversy
--You know the safest place in Newark is EWR
--You can answer the question, "What is Metropark?"
--You know that Rutgers actually is a state university
--Your hometown's claim to fame is the Supreme Court case that it LOST. (Piscataway)
--You actually know a decent amount of native American language even though you are not native American... And you don't know you know it.
--When you go to other states you wonder where all of the County Routes went
--You think Great Adventure is the only theme park in the world
--You're bored with weekend trips to Atlantic City
--You know the best boardwalk is actually in Ocean City, because there's nobody puking all over it
--You resent the invasion of New York teenagers during prom season
--You know what a blue crab is and how to catch one for dinner
--You also know that fishing for anything, anywhere other than the Cape, is hazardous to your health
Up, up and away!

When people start telling you that you smell like the New Jersey Turnpike.

1.) You live in a $700,000 Dollar house with a three car Hummer sized garage, yet don't have enough yard to play catch.
