How Is The Mercedes C240 Sedan?

Tue Jan 04, 2005 6:06 am

Hi there,

Just after some opinions on this vehicle as I shall be spending a lot of time with one in the not so distant future.

I hear they label it as the "Luxury Sedan". Does it live up to its name? Anything you can tell me from an owners point of view would be great.

Look forward to some comments.

Regards,

Hey,

I rented one for a few days last year. I liked it, it was cushy and plush when driven at a moderate pace, yet when driven quickly it had great road handling capabilities at a speed that I deemed worthy of flying off the road and into the trees of Seattle, with or without the stability control kicking in. Turn-in into the corners was slower than I liked, not just the steering ratio itself being 'slow' but the lazy way the front of the car reacted to my steering input. I like my cars front end to to be extremely sensitive in yaw as I add a steering input, but compliant to the undulations of the road without upsetting the attitude of the vehicle in pitch or yaw.

One thing I REALLY like about the C240 was the refrigerated center compartment under the armrest, now that is SWEET! Kept my 'soda' cool...

Its kind of anemic on power--the C320 is a better drive--but more $$ and supposedly the C230 is more fun to drive than the C240. If you want it in stickshift I say go for the C230--its more fun to drive than the 240. Otherwise, while I'm not a big fan of the C-Class save for the C32 and C55 it is a decent luxury car--smallish but decent.

Ooooooh. I have a C-240. I am so in love with my car that when it's lease is up in a few months there will be a tearful good-bye. Unfortunately I will have to step down car wise. Probably a Honda Accord since my husband is about to take a flight instructing job (BIG cut in pay).
I have never vared much about a car until I met this one. It's black with the tan interior. Its a 2002 model. I admit it is a bit sluggish but I over look that  Big grin Anytime there is a problem, this car tells you. I then simply press the little picture of a wrench and low and behold, I am immediately talking to somebody that knows about every little thing on my car. Even common questions. I LOVE it, love it, love it, love it. I swear to you as soon as possible I am moving back into a Mercedes. I think my heart might truly break having to return this car.  Sad

ScottysAir... I mean AAplat,

Besides the obvious, that you just stated, what else from your experience of owning or driving a C240 makes you believe it is so good?

Thanks.

Well the way it handles and rides the curvs and also the quick acceleration are positives. Also the spaciousness and comfortability even though it is smaller than most cars and is a lot less expensive. As a matter of fact it even has more room then the short wheelbased Jaguar,or at least it seems that way. Also Mercedes is a great car company so all in all...it is a great car....

Is this something you read somewhere or are you speaking from experience? According to your profile you are not old enough to drive.

Boy do I wish I was old enough to drive...but anyways a friend of our family and an old neighbor had the car and often took me through the Canyon in it to the Ocean....it was a nice ride.....performed amazingly for what I thought. I thought that it would be slow and lagging but it had a lot of zap!!

I would like to trade my trusty Sedona for a C240 but I think that the salesperson would break a rib or two laughing over the whole thing.

Miss Scarlet,

The blue panzermobile was rented from a cool brother at Hertz who suggested the upgrade for $10 more than the $24.99 Focus that I originally reserved. I only had one question, 'unlimited mileage?'. The answer was 'yes', and I jumped at it. Put 400 miles on it in 3 days! Legroom in the back was good, more so than a 3 series.

The Mercedes C240 (the entire C line) tends to be rather soft. At auctions they generally run about 4,000 back of book. The C240 also tends to be rather under powered. If you are looking to spend 35-$40K on a car, the BMW 3 series is a much better bet, or the Lexus IS or ES line. Heck if you hand find a great deal on a Lexus GS, that is what I would do!

Basically--the C class is for folks that really like the styling--because it has never one a comparo between the competition, the 240 is somewhat redundant now that the sportier 230 is out. I say wait a bit for the new 3 series. The G35 is the best buy in the class--me personally I'd probably go with the upcoming Mazdaspeed 6 if I was searching for a small sedan in that price range.

Why bother. For quite a bit less money (at least here in the USA) you can get an Acura TSX (essentially the European Honda Accord with more luxury items and a 200 bhp (SAE) engine) that drives almost as well, gets pretty decent fuel efficiency, and of course you get the excellent Honda reliability.  Big thumbs up

The C240 is a hardly worth your time or money. It's too small of a car (in many ways). Your better of spending your hard earned money or a larger, safer, more comfortable, more powerful car:

Volvo S60R drooooooooooooool its bad ass. You could get a slightly used one for about the same as that overpriced C240. and have AWD and 300HP.

It is a great small and compact car. It is great for a low-budget person who truly wants luxury!!!

Luxury???? Give over. The only thing luxurious about it is the Mercedes badge on the front that associates it with S & CL which are luxurious models.

Sit in the back of a C class and tell me it is luxurious. Grab a hold of the binnacle and give it forceful push and tell me it is well built....

In summary, I'd take one over a Daewoo but my opinion of C class are they are Mercedes for people who can't afford to own a real Mercedes.

So Mercedes vehicles are not made to the same standards across their entire model line?

Sort of like a 737 is crap compared to a 747 or an A319 is junk comared to an A346?

I think what he's trying to say Aero, is that the more expensive Mercs are the proper Mercedes Benz.

There's a saying over here, "If you are going to do it, do it properly!" I think that's what he's getting at.

Personally I love all the Mercedes range! C-Class is awesome enough for me.

Actually they aren't Aeroblance--my mom has an SLK and the materials used in there lower models are not of the same grade as higher end Mercedes. I.E. MB Tex or BMW's leatherette--translation---VINYL. For me--the baby S-Class design doesn't cut it. There are better cars at that price point--most of the people I know that get those get them just to say that they have a Mercedes--no offense to C-Class buyers. If it was priced a little bit lower I would have some nicer things to say about it.

Real Mercedes. Think S Class, CL Class, SL Class and perhaps E Class

Rubbish, every Mercedes is a real Mercedes, from the A-Class to the CLS-Class. I drove a lot in my buddy's A-Class, this car is not comparable with my former car (a VW Golf) despite it should be a competitor of the Golf, the A-Class is much better regarding everything, beginning from the handling over the comfort till the service that Mercedes Benz is offering.

Since a few weeks I am driving a Mercedes (SLK 200) by myself and I am absolutely satisfied with it, high-tec, comfort, user friendliness, and excellent handling on the highest level!

I can absolutely recommend every Mercedes car to everyone, despite they are quite expensive, they are a very good investment!

I have trouble thinking that Mercedes would skimp out that bad on their lower priced vehicles. It's bad business, think about it. I like the C-class, true, I do not like V-6 engines (I like I-6's), but the C-class had good attention to detail for the money in comparison to other cars that they produce.

Cheaper materials. Weezy engines (C43 and C320 exempt). Substandard build quality.

Fbgdavidson,

It was the best rental car I ever had, price-independant, and I've had some good ones that just fell flat on their face when pushed hard. Of course as an engineer, a pilot and a card carrying-member of the SCCA (it does get used), I must have no idea about what I just said........SShh, don't tell my employers, or my customers....

I paid $35/day that one weekend in Seattle, THAT will never happen again. $70 is not that bad, just drive the sh*t out of it and tell us what you think of it, your own perceptions are what matter the most.

Um..no. Mercedes is Mercedes. However, if you wanna say that...then I'd say that the A-class looks something like those other funny-sounding Asian cars (you know..Kia, Huyndai etc).

Personally, I just love the C-class. IMO that is the best Mercedes ever..affordable, and awesome.

It's a Mercedes:

It either has a V8 compressor with auto gear with huge plastic skirts all around, or it's a taxi with wheel caps

a v8 Compressor? Uh no. Try either a 4 cylinder Kompressor (C230), 2.4L V6 (C240) or 3.2L V6 (215HP C320) or a naturally aspirated V8 (C55 AMG). However, the 3.5L V6 that makes 268HP from the SLK350 is on the way to the E class (E350) and the C Class (C350) which will make that model of the C-Class a serious mover. That is an interesting proposition--now I do like the C55 AMG--the C32 is nice too but the V8 power and CLK front end are winners.

Yeah I read of how they pasted that CLK front on the C-Class.

How come they didn't do the contrary too? stick a C-Class front on a CLK end. I mean they do seem to try every permutation there is out there (all cars, all engines, just mix the whole thing together. A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, M-Class, G-Class, S-Class, Maybach (pimped S), and now introducing a brand new concept that even the Japanese didn't think of: a four-door coupe, meet the brand new marketing ploy: the CLS! And please don't forget to be impressed with the same 3-valve per cylinder all mighty V8 Compressor with the same auto tranny, sitting as king of most product lines mentioned).
crap!
