Germany Increases Support To 500M EUR In SEA

Wed Jan 05, 2005 2:51 am

Germany´s government has decided to increase financial support for regions hit by the tsunami to 500 million EUR (~650 million US$). Target areas are mainly Sri Lanka and Sumatra. In addition the German public has so far raised close to 100 million US$. The large supply vessel "Berlin" is currently on its way into the desaster-hit region, and within the next few days a mobile hospital will be deployed to Sumatra to restore medical capabilities in this part of Indonesia. In addition several GO- and NGO organisations from Germany are operating in various parts of the region. Well, for once this government has done something right... now - there are other places in the world which could need some help as well.

Wasn't it just 30 million the other day? That's quite a jump!

Personally, I couldn't think of any other way the money would be spent better. I fully support our government, and so does the huge majority of the German people, I haven't heard ANYBODY here complaining about it.

This is perfectly ok with me. I just hope that the money will end up where it helps most and that not a large part of it is going to line pockets of corrupt politicians at the receiving end.

Jan,

Good point about a portion of the funding going to line pockets of corrupt officials. I fear that 60-70% of the monies, country of origin irregardless, will line the pockets of not only corrupt politicians, but also corrupt officials in certain 'relief organizations'. It's a shame, but a matter of fact. I've witnessed it first-hand. That's all that I can say.

I just saw on ZDF that Michael Schumacher donated 1.000.000 USD, impressive for sure but actually no reason to freak out, it is the same as I would donate 10 EUR because of the income difference between him and me.

Patrick

Edit: Typo, Schumacher donated 10.000.000 USD

The problem with donatations like the one of Mr. Schumacher is, that organizations like the Médecins Sans Frontières are still having to little money to effectively support other regions that desperately need help as well, whereas they have more then enough money to spend on countries affected by the Tsunami. At the same time, transferring the surplus would be illegal.

Oh hell. Is it really that hard to let Schumacher enjoy his wealth? I mean, he's only the best F1 driver the world has ever seen and the F1 is nothing but a big money making/wasting scheme, so he might as well get his part of the cake. Sure it's easy to donate $10.000.000 when you've made $65.000.000 this year, but what the hell. Stop being so begrudging.

Why is this whole aid thing look like it is degrading down to a "Bidding war"

L-188, you are correct, this "donation contest" is becoming more and more ridiculous in my opinion. The people give and give but most of them don't care where the money will end later, maybe because the people feel good only because they donated, no matter to whom.

This money is well spent...we fork so much money out of the windows here in Germany that doesn't help anyone who really needs it, in this case it helps those who really need it...those who fight for their sheer lives, a fact that none of us here can really comprehend since we are all sitting on our well-fed asses and torture our keyboards!

So yes, go give that money, send over ships, aircraft, whatever!
