Can You Freeze A Bottle Of Champagne?

Wed Jan 05, 2005 4:30 am

My question is if it is possible to freeze in a bottle of Champagne in my Fridge?
Since I have to take it somewhere, and I do not have any cooler with me. Since I want it to be cold about 10 Hours Later or so.

Any suggestions?
Thank You

NO! That would be disasterous.

1) Champagne will freeze and expand, cracking bottle or forcing cork out.

2) Will ruin taste.

Indeed - the best way to keep it cool (or so I've been told) is to wrap it in a wet towel or something like. Keep in mind that it should be served at around 10 degrees C for optimum taste.

Wrap it in a wet towel.. while you're driving hang it out the window for a few mins at a time (if possible and if safe). That will cool it down VERY quickly!

Or put it in the trunk (boot) of the car.

Typical Dutch request.... who else would travel 10 hours with something that can be (probably) bought at destination. (Dag buurman  Big grin )

If it is by car and you do not pull the caravan, try a good coolbox, fill it with ice, put it in the trunk, cover it with an old cover or insulating material, and try to keep the temp inside the car below 20C.

If it is by air (I bet), and if you fly KLM (second bet), call KLM customer service in Amstelveen and they will keep a bottle for you in the plane, since you are a local there is a good chance you'll have it free of any charge.

If it is by boat, take a good 3/8" marine quality rope (length according to the boat's side height), wrap the bottle in a good layer of foam or something similar (to absorb shocks) then put this in a solid cotton or plastic bag. Make a tight knot and leave the bag with bottle in the water, hanging alongside the boat at approximately 3/4 of its length, but on the downwind side.

Submarines have fridges, even in the Dutch Navy.

If by train, use the same set up as for the car. If it is a Dutch train, chances are it will be cool inside.

What's the amount of alcohol in Champagne, 12-13 %? Does it really freezes in a fridge, which should be around -18 degrees Celsius?

Pure alcohol (ethanol) would freeze at -114 deg C. But Champagne only contains 13% of alcohol, and the other substances will have another freezing point. Champagne would freeze somewhere around 0-> -20 degrees C.

So yes, Champagne will freeze, Ive accidentally done it.

Do never complain about the taste!!!! You ruin your stuff with that, rather take a cooler with ice with you and put it in there, but do not freeze it.
