Pepsi Ad + Tsunami = No No No.

Wed Jan 05, 2005 7:50 pm

Pepsi have been forced to withdraw their latest ad featuring their new Pepsi football team, including Raphael Van Der Vaart, Raúl, Ronaldinho, David Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Thierry Henry and Fernando Torres. the idea was to have the footballers surfing some giant waves (presumably while playing football and drinking Pepsi, something we all do during a normal day...). But given recent events, the ad has now been withdrawn. So, are the promotion photos from Pepsi too likely to cause offence with the Tsunami victims? Scroll down, and judge for yourself...

I'm sorry to say this - as horrified as I was by the tragedy - we need to move on.

The absolute bad luck of making the commercial did bring a little giggle out in me though. My heart is of course with those affected by the tragedy.

Poor pepsi.

Pepsi weren't to know about the disaster when they shot the add, but under the circumstances they were probably right to stop it.

But really, what a hideous sight Big grin

Although Pepsi withdraws the ad, this picture will surely be used for sick jokes. I remember receiving a photo by email of Geri Haliwell singing "It´s raining men" with the Twin Towers on the background and people falling down...

Hahahahaaaa Big grin

Seriously though, like QFF said, its time to move on. The TV here is FULL of this tsunami tragedy, and frankly, its reached a point where it has become disgusting. There was a story just now about how generous Australians are...and the guy said "C'mon Australia, let's show the world how generous we are".

What the hell?! We shouldn't use this tragedy to promote ourselves. And enough already with the tsunami stories...its becoming too much...let's get on with our lives.

Give me a break. Its a commercial, its not something making light of the disaster. Should they stop advertising cars on T.V. because people die every day in car crashes? And while those shorts are horrible, the ad should be yanked because of the fact they are playing Soccer...period.

KROC, is this about Football being more popular than American Football?  Big grin

Anyway, just read that a breakfast cereal company are withdrawing an ad for their products where a woman runs on a sunny beach... Now that is overdoing things...

I remember a TV ad here in germany showing an airliner crashing into a skyscraper. That ad was launched a few days before 9/11, and of cause withdrawn immiadetely.
Pepsi is right not to show this surfer ad.
Btw whats with the Shell Tsunami ad where a Ferrari F1 drives on a beach?

Pepsi did the right thing but I feel that the ad is OK. However many may be offended by it at this time. I will not be suprised if it went to air in a few months after the tsunami scene has 'calmed down'
