Internet Speed

Sun Jan 09, 2005 9:37 am

Hey,

I was just wondering why don't we all name our ISP e.g. AOL, Speed of service e.g. 512K, type of service e.g. Cable and then do a speed test to actually carry out the test and post the results here. To make it fair I will list some sites from around the globe so that everyone gets accurate results..

For the UK & Europe:
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

For users outside of UK & Europe this test is good as you can select your location from a drop down list after selecting your type of internet connection.
http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

Note, UK and European users can use either speed test

My Results
Downstream: 470 Kbps (58.8 KB/sec)
Upstream: 245 Kbps (30.6 KB/sec)

ISP
Pipex Internet
http://www.pipex.net

Speed of Service
512K

Type of Internet
ADSL

Chris

ISP: Free (www.free.fr)

Your test gives 2.7 Megabits/s, which is true. But I should have 5 Mbits/s. Damned.
Upload: up to 1 Mbits/s

I got 2.4 MB/sec, even though I am going through a router with my son also connected with his computer.

I have Time-Warner RoadRunner Cable

3953.5 kbps or almost 4 Mbps so that would come out to about 500kb/second

Metronet http://www.metronet.co.uk ADSL 512 Pay as you go service

From Adslguide
Downstream 470 Kbps (58.8 KB/sec)
Upstream 246 Kbps (30.8 KB/sec)

Note that the speeds you get depend on more than your ISP. Your exchange will also be a factor if it is overloaded and your route to the ISP and then to the website you do the speed test on will vary between users.

Blue Yonder Broadband, through a router to my laptop at 100KB/sec.
Currently sat at a work PC, shared broadband connection speed of a snail, 28KB/sec. A.net takes so long to load!

The only slowdown I've noticed is when using servers that are heavily loaded. IE downloading Half Life 2 the day it came out! Man those STEAM servers must have been working overtime  Big grin hehe

Looks like I'm running at 2.2 megabits per second on a DSL line. Usually it's faster... all the gamers on my block must be up late tonight.

Ok can anyone help me here with some advice.

I just got ADSL hooked up today, 512kbps.

I am downloading a few files such as modzilla from download.com and a few others from some other sites, and the fastest speed I have got today was 20kbps.

I am downloading a file at the moment at 2.14kbps. No actually its 1.4 now.

Can someone tell me what I should be expecting when downloading files with this connection, and also if theres anything wrong with these figures!?

I went to the test sites above, and downloaded the DR things already, but no difference.

Thanks!

ISP: Rogers Cable
Downstream: 5 Mbps
Upstream: 800 Kbps

I'm pleased with this service, although it wasn't great in the beginning (97/98) when my local ISP was still linked up with @Home. After they became an independent ISP the service became much more reliable, and now there's hardly any downtime to speak of.

Longreach

Your speeds depend on the server you are downloading from. If it's in Scotland and you are in Sydney then there's a hell of a lot of cable to travel!

Go to http://www.broadbandreports.com and do the tweaks and tests, that'll possibly improve matters.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

I am downloading a few files such as modzilla from download.com and a few others from some other sites, and the fastest speed I have got today was 20kbps.

To try and further help you Longreach, you mention that you were downloading at 20kb/sec. That would be more typically seen on a connection that is ~160Kbps; not 512.

Under optimum conditions, (which, as Whitehatter points out, depend on your location from the server) you can expect your 512 Kbps connection to download at about 60-65kb/sec.

You might want to have your ISP come out and do a signal strength test. In some cases, DSL subscribers find out (after they sign up) that the signal in their particular neighbourhood is too weak to provide decent speed. Other factors though, as simple as line interference from an old phone in the house, can degrade the DSL.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Scott

Thanks AC848 and Whitehatter.

I have filters on all lines but one at the moment, so maybe that is why.

I have moved the computer and am now having problems connecting AGAIN, so cant run tests atm.

THanks for the help though.
