L. Armstrong May Not Compete In 2005 Tourde France

Tue Jan 11, 2005 4:44 am

... but rather instead focus on other competition such as Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Tour of Italy, Tour of Spain etc

....
Armstrong, though, said that his decision would not be based on his sometimes fractious relations with the French public. In fact he claimed he was liked by the majority of them:

"I think this perception (in the US) between myself and the entire French public is absolutely incorrect. The majority of people are supporting me on the side of the road, a few say nasty things ... I am fine with that."

Actually, I think the new sponsor, The Discovery Channel, is requiring that Lance and the team start doing a lot better in the other big races.

I would love to see them increase their budget, get Herras back and take the Vuelta.

However, I think they have no business in the Giro and unless they can find a few good Italian riders (in addition to Paolo) to join up they should avoid it at all costs.

In cycling the sponsors dictate everything and while the US Postal Service was content with winning the Tour every year, Discovery wants more publicity all over Europe.

After 6 times of whooping up on the French I'd quit too.

Armstrong has expressed and interest in riding the Giro but has publically stated that he will not go there to give their media and police a field day to to question him over the pending court case with Phillpo Simione.

Lance Armstrong writes his own ticket and it is not that he will be riding other races for Discovery but for himself to prove that he is still a classic's rider, hence his bitter disappointment over the number of years in not winning the Amstel Gold Race. Discovery have a number of fine riders who are better suited for shorter stage races and classic's than Lance but Armstrong has continuously expressed his interest in competing competitively in such races and winning them as some people have questioned weather he is only good for winning the Tour De France, he has outlined many years ago he would love to win a number of classic one day races.

Lance during a number of interviews has been uming and arghing whether he will be back in 2005, if he doesn't arrive it will be purely for a different rider to emerge victarious. He has said it must be boring and would be nice for some one else to win as some critics have said it kills the Tour De France. Lance is a very generous guy in that he has given up a stage win on Mon von Teux in the tour which he so badly wants and in this years tour didn't sprint against Basso in the first mountain top finish, however the next few days he did.

He has the drive and desire to win that no other rider has, he often says that Ullrich is the bigger talent and he seems to be but the fire inside Jan doesn't burn so brightly where as in Lance it does. If he is at the start this year he wont be going for second place and I would put money on Lance standing atop the podium on the Champs-Elysees in July.

Can you blame him? Think of the staggering amount of time you have to prepare for something like the Tour... it leaves you with like nothing. He's proven he rocks, but there's a point when everyone has to move on with life. And like C-boy said, leave when you're at the top of your game...

It will be interesting to see who will have the honor this year. My guess is Jan Ullrich. But I would love to see either Basso or Sastre win. But that is probably not possible.

I would love to see an American win and win for another 6 years or for that matter anyone win for 6 years...boy would that be interesting...but nothing would be as interesting and memorable as Lance Armstrong and his fight with cancer....

Ulrich's time has come and passed.

I believe the next winner will be either Bobby Ulrich(if that is the Ulrich you meant Ignore the above post) or Basso.

The one who I would love to see win would be Roberto Heras though.

As much as his 6 times-in-a-row success has to be admired, I say: thank God!
He made the TdF as boring as Schumacher made the Formula1.

The 2003 tour was anything but boring...

Regarding future winners, I'd say the T-Mobile squad is dealing with a bad case of "too many chiefs, not enough indians".
