Baby Is Born/Distribution Of Cigars

Tue Jan 11, 2005 4:51 am

I'm not sure if this topic was ever discussed in this forum; I did not have the time nor patience to did through the archives to find out.

A co-worker of mine was handing out cigars to any interested persons today. His wife recently gave birth to a son late last week.

My question is, where did the tradition of the baby's father passing out cigars to everyone after his child is born originate?

Any thoughts? I'm just curious.

Here's one thought on the tradition:

When our two girls were born, we handed out large chocolate bars that said "HerSHEys" on them (made to read "here she is"). The male newborn counterpart was "HersHEys" (or similar).
