Best Cheap Sound Insulator?

Sat Jan 15, 2005 9:36 am

Me and a few buddies of mine are looking at collaborating on recording ideas and passing them back and forth until we have our ideas developed into songs. Trouble is, our recording studio consists of my dorm room, and theirs, and well you know how thin dorm walls can be.

So does anybody know what I could use as a really cheap sound insulator?

Lots and lots of blankets and cusions? If your going to be playing loud, everyone is still going to hear it, but materials like that should help. You'll need a $hitload of material, though, and it may be too expensive.

How about foam...that deadens the sound and doesn't cost all that much.

Foamboard insulation is probably your best bet. Ideally, two layers on all surfaces, with a small gap inbetween. It is generally rather cheap (since it is mediocre insulation), but still has good sound deadening capabilities. Try to avoid mylar coated foam, as it will reflect noise, making it more difficult to obtain a clear recording.

Also try to avoid torching your room a la that nightclub in Argentina.

To be fair, our recording isn't extremely loud, what is is my vocal. Whether or not I want the whole hall hearing my vocal without any music behind it is something I don't really want to risk  Nuts

If you are going to perform this stuff...you shouldn't have to worry about people hearing you down the hall. But if you want privacy, does your college have music rooms? They are generally outfitted with that protective layer that you are desiring.

Well here's the funny thing. Music rooms are in one hall, recording equipment is at the radio station in the campus union building.
