The FCC Is Getting Out Of Hand...

Tue Jan 18, 2005 7:25 pm

http://entertainment.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=178841

This is getting ridiculous! Blurring out cartoon characters' behinds? $7,000 fines for showing an underwear-clad man getting spanked??? When will the pendulum swing back to the middle ground? Four more years or sooner?

OMG!

To be honest, I am glad that I don't have all that cencorship over here in Denmark.
It's really redicilous. It's a cartoon show for christ sake. If someone gets disturbed by that they might as well go lying themselves in the grave. Everyone has seen an ass, dick or vagina. So why all the fuzz about it?

Because the puritanical, grab-ass idiots that really run things around here (and I'm not talking just about GWB & Company - but all of the people across America like the woman who organized the protest of the show Married With Children years ago, et al) think that showing ANY form of sexual innuendo on TV leads to rape - the same as marijauna leads to heroin! That is why the rape and sexual assault rates here in the US are so much higher than they are in countries like Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, etc, where viewing this sort of material is far more widely accepted.  Yeah sure

OYRJA, I have about the same view as you do, being a liberal Scandinavian... However: Everyone has seen an ass, dick or vagina. So why all the fuzz about it?...

Well... you're familiar with Big Brother for example... now, even though I don't react violently when I see a genital, I appreciate the fact that there might be small children also watching, and I feel that it is inappropriate for a five year old to see a genital...or a sexual act for that matter...

But blurring out a cartoon bare naked ass, that's just dumb... It's about as dumb as blurring out a guys hat that has a marijuana plant on it...
The title on this thread couldn't be more spot on...

It really is almost surreal on network TV here.

In an interview with Richard Speck, the slug who murdered eight student nurses many years ago, they blurred his chest because it looked like a woman's. It is legal to show a man's chest but they still blurred it. Now I did not particularly want to see his fishbelly-white, sagging body but - thank you Washington, I'll protect the morals of my own family.

Some of the language censoring is funny. If someone is a POS jerk, you don't call him an "airhead" just because the two syllables start with "A" and "H." When I am really, really irritated with someone I don't say "forget" you! I've watched some movies on the Bible-belt TV networks and wondered why they bothered at all to attempt to show them when they had to cut half the dialogue.

I'll agree there are things I just don't want to have to explain to a five-year-old, but that is what bedtime is for. After the wee ones are asleep, I don't care much about what they show, as long as I have a choice of watching or not.

I've said it before (about the "wardrobe malfunction") the female breast is the property of the US Government and it is only to be used for nursing infants and selling beer!

Agree 100% - To an extent, that is how it should be. Parent's should take more responsibility in monitoring what children watch. Granted, sex is being used more and more to sell these days.

Watching something like Smokey and the Bandit or Die Hard on network TV is actually pretty funny. I would just love to know how someone came up with the idea of replacing Son Of a Bitch with "Scumbum". Jackie Gleason's swearing in Smokey and the Bandit (the uncut version) is poetry, censoring that fine work is like covering the ding-a-ling on Michelangelo's David.

Something needs to be done about censorship in this country. I say let people do whatever they want on regular cable TV, let the parents censor what their children see/hear. Some control probably should be maintained over the regular airwaves.

My dad has Sirius sat radio so I have heard radio that is totally uncensored. I can't help but think some of the talking heads on there are saying Fcuk just because they can, it gets a little old.

But there I go asking for people to take responsibility for what goes on in their own homes, we all know that is asking too much in this country.

...At PBS, executives said this weekend they will edit out a glimpse of a naked woman in a fictional account of a terrorist "dirty bomb" attack that will air next month after being shown first on HBO.

This is the BBC drama about an attack on London. Editing this scene out is beyond belief; it is in NO WAY remotely erotic. The scene in question is of terrified people being hosed down as they go through the control area to leave the immediate vicinity of a dirty bomb attack. Obviously, their clothes are removed in case of contamination. It's frightening, not a turn on.  Insane

Did you just assume?

Rapes per 100,000

France 88
UK 79
Germany 76
Denmark 65
Netherlands 56
Finland 56
United States 50

Source: Interpol

Imagine that.

So when will they start wearing burkhas in the US and hanging televisions from telegraph poles?

Is the implication of the FCC's behaviour that your average Jane/Joe in America is so fragile with regard to human anatomy that any area of exposed flesh will cause social collapse or something? Is this a new victorian age where an uncovered ladies ankle was pornography and the myth was that table legs had to be covered so as not to excite red blooded males?

Not necessarily myths, you know. In the US, the spelling of "titbit" was amended to "tidbit" for precisely those reasons. The tit family of birds was re-named in America for the same reason.

It's hilarious watching a movie on TBS I think they have blocked out damn now considering it a profanity. Also last year Die Hard 2 was on and the line at the end where Bruce Willis says "Yippe ki eh Mother F**ker" was changed to "Yippe ki eh Mr. Falcon" and the dubbed voice was a British guy. I can watch a movie like Swordfish on City TV here in Canada and the Halle Berry nude scene is shown with all the swearing, although the have the "This film contains nudity, violence, and course language" disclaimer on ever commercial.
Hell I have watched wild on in the States and that is censored and here all the crazy stuff that the show is about is shown.

Scunthorpe syndrome?

I still couldn't believe that the makers of Father Ted managed to get their liberal f-word usage past the censors, just by changing one vowel. Genius!

Well, they claimed it was an entirely different word, and no-one called them on their bluff.

Mind you, given the recent showing of Jerry Springer - The Opera, does it really matter that much any more? Can you imagine the outrage Stateside if they put that on?  Laugh out loud

Part of the US definition of "pornography" relates to "community standards." Gets sticky when you try to define community. The USG has been known to try pornography cases in the buckle of the bible belt even though the "crime" was committed elsewhere.

Define community when, on HBO you can say any word or show nudity, and despite the fact that you have to pay a monthly fee for it, more people subscribe to HBO than voted for any President. Community standards are actually, all the BS stripped away, accurately represented by HBO and Showtime and - the internet.

My son-in-law is not up to speed on computers and I was showing him the internet. I demonstrated Google, one of the best reference tools man has ever devised. At that moment my kids were talking about a Cheers episode where Norm responded to the usual How's-it-going-Norm? question with this gem: "It's a dog-eat-dog world and I'm wearing Milk Bone underwear!"

Well I typed in "Milk Bone Underwear" and got ten thousand porn hits on each word. You want the real community standards? There it is in a nutshell. (which word will probably also get porn hits.)

Charlotte NC is rumored to have more Baptist churches per capita than any city in the US. It is also said to have more topless bars. So tell me Charlotte, what are your community standards?

And it is not just us decadent westerners. Arab men studying here in the US have been legendary for their appetite for alcohol and strip clubs. I've been told several times that "Allah cannot see outside the Kingdom." What are community standards.

Europe; there is some hypocrisy in your cultures as well. You love to claim that there is no big deal at seeing some exposed skin and yet, judging from the adverts one sees in the streets and rail stations, bare flesh still seems to sell everything from perfume to jeans.

I think we like our hypocritical Victorianism as much as we like the titillation (sorry about that word, censors) itself.

Really? I had no idea HBO was that popular. Is that due to "bundling" or is HBO subscription on its own?

Actually, Banco I was just blowing smoke with that statistic. The real number according to a website is 18 million subscribers. A polite way of saying it was I was being figurative.

Maybe it is cultural, or economic class, but I literally do not know anyone who does not have either a premium TV channel which shows R-rated material, or access to the internet which shows X and beyond.

If you can find Matt Groening's speech at the British Comedy Awards, you would be amazed at some of the dialog which he has had to edit out from the Simpsons.

Here's the irony in what Fox did, no telling how many times that particular episode of Family Guy has aired not just on Cartoon Network, but also TBS, and no blurring was done then. If somebody gets offended by a cartoon butt, then they've got some problems in the head.

Yes, it is silly to many, but in the USA, there are many publicly religious people who vote and use their voices when they see example of adult language and nudity as it is moraly wrong and offensive to them. These 'religious' people can now be heard via the voting booth and activist religious self-rightous leaders to influence politicans and choose there own in political office. In turn, the FCC has pressure put on broadcast media producers to censor or 'die' from fines. To me a little accendental bad language or nudity in context isn't a problem. If I don't like a program due to their theme, language or nudity, then I don't watch it. Now I admit that far too often the producers of movies and TV shows are around people with liberal social beliefs and ignore a huge population that has a different idea of entertainment. To me what is more obscene is some of the silly shows, violence, irresponsable sex, bad ads, the fawning over President Bush and his neo-con artists and just general bad taste (especially with the reality shows) in too much of broadcast TV and many movies As a result, I don't watch much broadcast TV anymore nor see many movies.

I was amazed when Comedy Central started to show movies and stand-up routines uncensored after 1am on weekends. It was great to see the kids from South Park drop f-bombs like crazy, and know that I was, in fact, still in the US, and not watching it on some European TV station.

Slightly off-topic but, I beleive the FCC is stealing every dime of their wages until TV commercials are broadcast at the same volume as the programs as FCC regulation requires. If they are not going to enforce that then us taxpayers should not be paying them.

Scunthorpe is (supposedly) a name that is trapped by net nanny software because of letters 2 to 5.

The FCC represents the US population quite accurately. Programs related to violence is OK. But flash a nipple and apparently the very fibre of the American culture is threatened.....

Slightly off-topic but, I beleive the FCC is stealing every dime of their wages until TV commercials are broadcast at the same volume as the programs as FCC regulation requires. If they are not going to enforce that then us taxpayers should not be paying them.

Actually, TV broadcasters take great care in compressing the dynamic range of the audio signal before it's broadcast. This sort of puts a "cap" on the highest volumes. In order to get the maximum effect, the producers of commercials record at the highest volume levels.

So...the TV stations are actually moderating the broadcast audio, but commercials continue to contain the wider dynamic range than the typical TV program.

You can really see how much compression is done if you compare the same movie played on broadcast TV and on a tape or DVD. VTRs and DVD players don't normally compress the audio before its played so you get the complete dynamic range the program was recorded in. Resulting of course in movies that go from a whisper to a scream in a blink of an eye...

Im pretty pissed off at the outragous censoring in the US. its so pathetic its funny. I really saw the differences between the US and the rest of the world when i went on a 9th grade trip from DC to Quebec city a few years back. There we were-at 11:30pm,in the rooms, watching lesbian porn Big grin

Then we get back to DC and met with an edited version of "the matrix" where "jesus christ!" was changed to "jeepers creepers!".

makes me feel embarrassed to live in the country.

Another example of why today's conservatives love big government as much as the liberals like Ted Kennedy. If Ted Kennedy wants government to be your Mommy. Bush, Asscroft and gems like Rick Santorum want government to be your stern daddy.

I always thought true conservatism thought that you didn't need government to be a parent at all.

In the US, the spelling of "titbit" was amended to "tidbit" for precisely those reasons. The tit family of birds was re-named in America for the same reason.

Wow, I didn't know it was originally titbit. That's how I'm going to pronounce it from now on. But as a bird watcher, I can tell you we still call them tits. At least in heathen New York we do  Wink/being sarcastic

It's probably why Uranus morphed from urANus to URanus. Too close to Anus, even though the former is closer to the original Latin. Is that just an American thing?
