I'm Going To Court

Fri Jan 21, 2005 5:47 am

Here is the story. Monday, I went to do laundry at a laundry-mat. I pull my whites out and there is stains all over my clothes. My whites mostly consisted of dress shirts and socks. There was grease in the dryer left behind. The dryer looked normal to me. 5 shirts were ruined. 2 of which were brand new. The laundry mat refuses to cooperate, so I'm taking them to court. I will win the case.
These aren't t-shirts either.

Just thought I'd give everyone the heads up  Big grin

I'm sure the judge will be impressed that your clothes were ruined at a "laundry mat". Thanks for keeping us all updated with every aspect of your day. BTW, yesterday, I had a great deal to eat and drink, and I'm going to the bathroom.

You don't have a case.

Ever see all of those signs around that say, "Not Responsible for lost or damaged laundry". I know the one I use has them all over the place.

Plus you have a responsiblity to inspect the dryer prior to use.

Okay a little more now:

I did infact inspect the dryer. I went to an upscale cleaners, and they agreed with me it is not my fault. How is it my fault that they do not clean out their dryers? It is not my responsibilty to scrub a dryer.

I talked with my father (since I'm still dependent on him as I'm still in college) it was his idea to have a suit against them, the cleaners said the same thing I will be using his lawyer. I will not seek anymore money than they owe me, but I believe as do everyone I've talked to in person, that I am owed the money.

They constantly defer me and tell me to call the next day. The owner won't talk to me, though the owner tried to get the stains out herself. If it WASN'T their fault then why would they feel so bad and try to get the stains out?

Secondly. I went the next day and the woman working said "Gladdis was working, she was supposed to wipe out all the dryers."

So you're talking 2 brand new dress shirts and 3 used dress shirts. First off, always bring white dress shirts to a dry cleaner/professional laundromat. They're about $1-$2 each, and any problems are their responsibility. Secondly, what is the value of your shirts, $200 Tops? That's small claims, AA, and having a lawyer is a bit of $$$ overkill isn't it?

Good god! $85 per shirt? If I ever spent that much on a regular shirt, I'd take it to the drycleaner. There's plenty of places around here that do it for 99 cents.

How interesting: a rich kid using daddy’s lawyer to sue a small business owner over something trivial. Thanks for sharing. Do you expect them to clean all the machines after each use? Why anyone would want to start a business here is beyond me.

One thing I do not understand. You can afford 85$ shirts, yet, you cannot afford a washing machine ?
Gosh, my shirts average 20€ - they are not Lacoste, granted (and anyway, no right minded French would wear Lacoste), but I own a very good washing machine.

Went to the laundry mat for the first time of my life three weeks ago. I had just moved in my new flat, and the washing machine was not plugged in.
One thing I made sure, is that there wasn't anything left in the machine before stuffing my clothes in. I had just watched 'Catch me if you can' , and the sight of Tom Hanks taking all his pinked whites out of the machine was still clear in my mind.

Good luck in court anyway.

Cheers,

I don't own a washing machine either, I bring all my dirty clothes to the dry-cleaner (yes all, incl. my boxer shorts!). My parents as well as my girlfriend's parents tell us since weeks (since we moved together to Hamburg) that we should buy a washing machine but somehow we are too lazy Big grin.

Well, at least I already get discount at the dry-cleaner  Big thumbs up.

I don't own a washing machine myself, it really doesn't make sense in an apartment.

when my girlfriend gets her house we are getting a washing machine. Not because somehow we have more money, but because the nearest place to do our laundry would be several miles away.

Before law school, you need to hit laundry school -

**You don't put dress shirts in a dryer** (Personally, I woudn't put them in a washing machine, either. Handwash or dryclean, kiddo).

Perhaps your Mom could tell you the basics about doing laundry before you ruin the rest of your clothes...?

Well I can't speak for the Washer, but if he can stand to walk into a Wal-Mart he can pick up a clothesline for about $3.50 and hang it in his room.

Figure about $5 bucks out of pocket by the time he gets pins.

Or if he wants to live large....which he might based on the prices of those shirts, he can get one of those wood clothes drying racks that fold up.

Now now, I know for a fact that KROC makes the Super Mega Ultra Mega road trip from KROC to KBUF most weekends and that is over 62.5 miles (That's kinda like 100 kilometers) .

As to the washer thing a ma bob, I highly recomend having at least one of those thingys. We have a marvy front loader and sometimes to unwind from my oh so stressful mod duties here and on airwhiners I will just sit and watch the clothes spin round and round, well untill the voices saying delete, Delete, DElete, DELete, DELEte, DELETe, DELETE stop

Let me see if I understand you....
> You go into a public laundromat, of which 99.9% of the customers understand the "use at your own risk" philosophy;
> I assume the facility isn't supervised, so they may not have known the person before you who used the machine messed it up;
> They TRIED to repair your shirt for you at no cost --- which was an obviously nice gesture, and not an admission of responsibility.

...and you're suing them for a couple of shirts because they're an "upscale" laundromat and their 'use-at-own-risk' sign wasn't up to par?

Would you rather them have you sign a waiver when you walk into the place?

You may win in court, but just remember something.....
Your Dad supports you ... the cost of replacing your shirts which I'm not sure if you bought or not, will come out of their own pockets, not their parents'.

And this is the reason our courts are clogged with stupid court cases. Because every "wronged" idiot with a rich sugar daddy has to have his/her day in court to right their wrong. Take some fu*king responsibility and nut it up.

Oh yeah, you can by that same Banana Republic shirt at Old Navy for a third the price, but I guess it won't have the same ring to it when you go name dropping on the INTERNET.....Haha! Sad.

Firstly (and clearly less important), I think we should consult Scotty to see what he has to say about this. KROC...can you hook us up?

Seriously, it's frivolous lawsuits like this make Americans appear stupid to the rest of the world. There's 100's of thousands of people dying from the effects of the tsunami and you want to sue a laundromat for $329? Give me a break! Have daddy donate $100 instead - you could even save a life that way.

Im going to take the side of the Laundry mat...

1) Proove that you didnt have this elbow grease/ ink in the pocket of your shirt(s) when you put them in the dryer or that you didnt put the stains on your clothes before you put them in the machine in an effort to get me to pay for new clothes because you are a starving student? My machines are regularly maintained/cleaned and here are my maintenance records to proove this.

2) As the sign says " We are not responsible..." so inspect the machines before you use them. Afterall, they are YOUR garments and you should properly care for them. BTW. it was not intentional.

Cheers.
